THIRD GRADE NEWS
This week was a BUSY and EXCITING week for our third graders. Third grade scientists had a Science Day where they had fun exploring science, technology, engineering, and math. The third grade teachers started with three demo science experiments: Mentos Geyser, Egg in a Bottle, and Exploding Watermelon. It was a day that was dedicated to sparking curiosity, fostering a love for science, and introducing them to the scientific method. Later that day, students showcased their science projects to their peers. Check out some of the pictures from the day!

FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Fifth graders wrapped up their Book Clubs last week. Through their exploration of captivating stories, they have participated in lively discussions and shared insights, gaining a deeper understanding of the books they've read, exploring themes, characters, and the author's craft. These book clubs have not only sharpened their critical thinking skills but also fostered empathy and understanding as they've considered different perspectives and experiences presented in the literature. They've learned the value of collaboration, communication, and listening to others' viewpoints.
For the last two weeks of school, students are enjoying the novel "Refugee" by Alan Gratz. This book intertwines the stories of three young refugees from different time periods and backgrounds.
Josef, a Jewish boy, flees Nazi Germany in 1938 aboard the MS St. Louis, hoping to find safety in Cuba.
Isabel, a Cuban girl in 1994, embarks on a perilous journey to the United States with her family on a makeshift raft, seeking freedom from oppression.
Mahmoud, a Syrian boy in 2015, escapes the violence in his homeland and undertakes a dangerous journey across Europe to find refuge in Germany.
Throughout their stories, the book highlights the challenges and hardships faced by refugees as they seek safety and a better life. It's a powerful story of courage, resilience, and the universal quest for hope amidst adversity.
Fifth-graders have had a fantastic year filled with wonderful novels! Students should continue reading over the summer as a great way to maintain their enthusiasm for books and keep their literacy skills sharp. Reading during the summer helps students retain what they've learned during the school year and prepares them for the challenges of the next grade level. Summer Reading and Summer Math Packets will be coming home during the last few days of school.
Have a wonderful summer!

NEWS FROM STEAM
Students in Makerspace have been discussing inventions and how they come about from a societal need or want. We also discussed how inventions can be modified to meet modern needs and wants, and how anyone at any age can be an inventor! Students had so much fun this past week drawing and modeling their ideas for new inventions using the materials in the Makerspace.
The Trex team plans to continue collecting plastic film over the summer so it can meet its goal to collect 1,000 pounds by November! Even though school is out, you can still drop off the film at the recycling center or Townhall this summer.
