Dear Parents
Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 2.
We recently held our School Board meeting. This was the final meeting for our Chairperson, Natasha Jones. Tash joined the Board in 2015 as both of her children were at school and she wanted to be a person who helped to make our school as good as it can be. In 2022, Tash became the Chair and in 2024 Aaron, her youngest child, completed Year 12. As a School Board member and Chair, Tash always worked to make this school better for the students, staff and community as a positive member with a can-do attitude. On behalf of all the students and staff I extend sincere thanks, and wish Tash well for the future. The School Board is important to the school, a nomination form is included in this newsletter and I encourage people to consider nominating to join the 2025/6 School Board.
The construction of the new crosswalk on Bashford St is now complete. The management of the crosswalk is through WA Police. We believe a Crossing Guard has been recruited and as soon as that person has been trained, the crosswalk with the guard, will be open before and after school. At the moment the crosswalk is not in use.
Time does go quickly; Kindy enrolments for 2026 are now open, if you, a neighbour or friend has a child turning 4 before 30 June 2026 please come into the school office to enrol for next year.
The winter rain is slowly arriving, but it has been great to see students running around playing winter sports and generally enjoying the cooler weather.
We have a busy period of sport coming up, Year 11/12 netballers will travel to Geraldton for a netball carnival, Year 3-6 have the Winter Carnival in Cervantes, playing soccer and netball and the whole school has the Cross Country in Week 9. Ms Halliley and Ms Baker have commenced cross-country training with various classes for what is always a good morning.
We are looking to upgrade the Kindy/PP play area. As part of this, we are planning to cut down three of the large gum trees in the yard. We have had issues with branches falling from these trees. This will open up the area for development and allow the grass to grow better. We will maintain all the other trees and still have plenty of shade areas.
There was an interesting article in the weekend paper claiming that parents want schools to teach students values. I strongly believe that every family should be free to decide their own values based on their own background beliefs and culture. Our school values specifically address the attributes that will lead to our students being successful at school, become good citizens and have success as adults in the workplace. Most of our students display our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Commitment every day. To assist students to learn that we are a Positive Behaviour School, we highlight and explicitly teach what certain behaviour looks like and how we display them at school so that we all have the same understanding. As with any large group of people there are a few who do not believe the rules apply to them and unfortunately do not display acceptable behaviour. I have asked staff to contact parents direct when a student’s behaviour stops themselves or others from learning. Thank you to the many supportive parents who have helped the staff to modify behaviour, working together is the best way to bring about meaningful change.
As always if you have any queries or concerns regarding your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher to arrange a time to meet.

Walk Safely to School Day
On Thursday 15th May, our school proudly took part in National Walk Safely to School Day — a fantastic initiative encouraging children and families to build healthy habits, reduce traffic congestion, and care for the environment.
It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces walking to school together! A huge thank you to our amazing volunteer staff — Ms. Baker, Ms. Barjaktarevic, Ms. Beaman, Ms. Bradbury, Ms. Cusens, Ms. Street, and Ms. Voss — for their time and support. This event would not have been possible without their help.
Thank you to everyone who took part and made the morning a great success!
Youth Scholarship - Outward Bound Expedition
The Shire of Dandaragan and the Shire of Coorow invite young people from their communities to apply for the Outward Bound Expedition Scholarship. This expedition is a youth development program designed to advance personal growth, resilience, self-confidence, and leadership skills.
If you or your parents live within the Shire of Dandaragan or the Shire of Coorow, and you are between 15 and 18 years of age, we would love to hear from you.
Applications close at 4pm on Friday, 30 May 2025.
HOMEWORK CLUB
Every Wednesday, 3pm - 4pm
What a great club to belong to and membership is open to everyone!
Homework Club is on every Wednesday from 3-4 pm in Maths Room 2.
It was fantastic to see students attending Week One of Term Two - which just shows how committed these students are.
It is a great atmosphere and students have access to two Mathematics teachers and two English teachers, which means students get individual support.
We would love to see more students attend.....and......you get an icy pole!
Year Six students are also invited to attend.
If you have any questions about Homework Club, please contact either Ms Watterson, Mrs Noble, Mrs Calderbank or Mrs Bishop.
WINTER WOOLY'S CLUB
A knitting / crocheting club will be held during lunchtimes on a Tuesday, in the library. Students who would like to attend are welcome to join in to learn how to knit or crochet. Equipment will be available for students to use.
Students who are interested can add their name to the sign up sheet in the Student Services building.
Below are a few of the items that will be available to make.
We welcome any donations of items for our club. Things that would useful are:

Thank you in advance!
Aaaaarrrggghhh! .... me Mateys
On Friday May 16th Jurien Bay District High School was over-run by cutlass wielding, eye-patched pirates!
But it was all for a good cause. It was ‘Dress up like a Pirate Day’ and was in support The Kids’ Cancer Project.
The Student Council organised the event, which included students dressing up as pirates and a tug of war on the lawn at lunchtime.
The winners for best dressed pirates in the Senior School were Logon Voss and Lily Clarke (although some thought this might have been rigged - get the pun!) as it was also Lily’s birthday!
Well shiver me timbers, in the Primary school the judges had a really tough time judging the winners of the best male and female costumes, but in the end decided on Maison Van Der Velden, Year 2 and Marlee Passamani, Year 4.
The lucky winners received canteen vouchers.
The highlight was the tug of war at lunchtime. There was a fantastic turnout of students, and it was a fiercely competitive battle, but it was the Primary school students who were victorious!
A total of $118.25 was raised for this very worthy cause.
A huge thank you to the Student Council for organising the event and a big SHOUT OUT to parents, caregivers and students for the effort made with the costumes. Finally, congratulations to Sabella Cook for creating the colourful poster that advertised the event. A truly talented young lady!

Congratulations to Bailey Kurz, Yr 3, on winning this year's Contributions & Charges Early Incentive Payment draw, which was drawn at the Learning Journey, at the end last term. Bailey and her family received a $100 dinner voucher, kindly donated by Kakka Alley Brewing Co.
Thank you, to all families for their prompt payment of fees.
PBS
The school's reward system was developed by the PBS team in 2021, to ensure a consistent approach across the school. There are 2 types of rewards given to students; faction points for following any of the school values at any time, and there are fast and frequent rewards that are given out regularly for following the fortnight behaviour focus. All children should be receiving a minimum of 1 reward per day. At the end of each fortnight, there are 6 random winners drawn from the tickets by the faction captains. There is 1 primary and 1 secondary reward for each faction. Faction points are then tallied and the faction with the most points, flies their faction flag outside of the canteen for the next fortnight.
