CMIT North HS Advocates for Charter Schools at Maryland Charter School Advocacy Day!
On February 19, 2025, CMIT North High School students, staff, and parents proudly participated in Maryland Charter School Advocacy Day in Annapolis, standing alongside other charter school communities to advocate for policies that support charter education.
Despite the cold temperatures and falling snowflakes, our students remained determined and resilient, moving from one legislative building to the next House of Representatives building to make their voices heard. They engaged in meaningful discussions with state lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of funding for afterschool programs, STEM initiatives, and resources that directly impact their education.
No matter the weather, we were ready to stand up for our school. Speaking to legislators helped me realize the power of student advocacy," shared Christian Medina, a junior at CMIT North.
It was cold, but that didn’t stop us! Our education matters, and we wanted to make sure lawmakers knew how much charter schools like CMIT North have shaped our futures," said Oluwaseyi Ogboola, a sophore
CMIT North is proud of its students for demonstrating leadership, perseverance, and passion for their education. A special thank you to our dedicated students, staff, and PTSO presidents and parent representatives for making this advocacy effort a success!

ECO ART CONTEST
Two Sides of the Ocean: 12th Grader Joseph Sauls Wins Eco Action Art Contest!
The ocean is a paradox—serene yet fierce, a sanctuary and a storm. It is this duality that inspired 12th grader Joseph Sauls, whose artwork was recently recognized as a winner in the Eco Action Art Contest hosted by The William S. Schmidt Center.
Joseph’s artwork, titled "Two Sides of the Ocean," masterfully captures the contrast between the ocean’s beauty and its hidden dangers. On one side, shimmering waves and thriving marine life symbolize the ocean’s role as a cradle of life. On the other, dark waters and looming threats serve as a stark reminder of environmental challenges like pollution and climate change.
His piece was selected for its powerful storytelling, artistic execution, and environmental message, encouraging viewers to reflect on their role in protecting our waters.
Joseph’s success highlights CMIT North High School’s dedication to STEAM education and environmental awareness, emphasizing the impact of art in driving conservation efforts.
Join us in congratulating Joseph on this incredible achievement! His work will be featured in an upcoming Eco Action Art Exhibition, showcasing student visions for a sustainable future.
Which side of the ocean will we choose to protect?
Stay tuned for more updates on student accomplishments and environmental initiatives at CMIT North!

Champion of Words, Champion of Opportunity: Aisha Mbaye Earns Full-Ride Posse Scholarship!
CMIT North High School is thrilled to celebrate an extraordinary achievement by Aisha Mbaye, Grade 12, who has been awarded a full-ride, four-year scholarship to the University of Rochester through the prestigious DC Posse Foundation!
Link:
12 Prince George's County students named Posse scholars, receive 4-year college scholarships
A dedicated three-year Debate Team member and this year’s Debate Team Captain, Aisha has honed her skills through the Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL), where she discovered the Posse Scholarship opportunity. WUDL has long been a strong advocate for this life-changing scholarship, frequently highlighting it at their Summer Camp, which Aisha attended last year. In fact, many PG County scholars who received the award learned about it through their involvement in debate, reinforcing its reputation as an “unofficial debate scholarship” in DC academic circles.
Aisha’s remarkable public speaking ability, exceptional writing skills, and fearless academic ambition set her apart as a deserving recipient of this honor. Her leadership, humility, and dedication to debate have made a lasting impact on her teammates and the CMIT North community.
Please join us in congratulating Aisha on this prestigious accomplishment! We are incredibly proud of her and cannot wait to see the amazing things she will accomplish at the University of Rochester and beyond!

AP Chemistry Students Explore Equilibrium Shifts Through the Rainbow Reaction
AP Chemistry students recently conducted an exciting hands-on experiment known as the “Rainbow Reaction,” investigating the dynamic nature of chemical equilibrium and the effect of stressors on solution color changes.
The experiment focused on Le Châtelier’s Principle, which explains how systems at equilibrium respond to changes in concentration, temperature, and pressure. Students began with a cobalt chloride solution, which exhibits distinct color changes under different conditions. By adding various reagents and adjusting factors like temperature, they observed shifts between pink, purple, and blue hues, providing a vivid illustration of equilibrium shifts in action.
This experiment was a fantastic way for students to see chemical concepts come to life. Rather than just reading about equilibrium in a textbook, students experienced how a system adjusts in real-time, reinforcing their understanding through direct observation. The hands-on approach deepened their comprehension of equilibrium principles and strengthened their problem-solving skills.
The AP Chemistry class continues to engage in inquiry-based learning experiences that challenge students to think critically and apply their knowledge to practical scenarios.
Technology Department Update:
Semester 2 courses have started for Financial Literacy and Business Communications. We are excited to start this new course with students and look forward to our partnership with the families. For AP CSP courses, please be mindful that a project for the AP exam is coming in the next month. CMIT Students Show Support and Compassion
In true CMIT spirit, compassion and unity shone brightly this month in Mr. Marshall's science class. When one of their classmates faced an extended absence from school, the students stepped up, showing care and support in thoughtful and meaningful ways. Their actions reflect the values of kindness and empathy that we strive to instill in all CMIT students.
Under Mr. Marshall’s guidance, the class demonstrated that learning goes beyond textbooks—it’s also about building a strong and caring community. These moments remind us that at CMIT, we are not just classmates; we are family.

Teacher Spotlight: Championing Student Voices Through C-SPAN Collaboration
This fall, Mrs. Cunning played a pivotal role in guiding CMIT Academy North High School students through an extraordinary journey: creating documentaries for the prestigious C-SPAN StudentCam Competition. With the competition’s theme, “Your Message to the President – What Issue is Most Important to You or Your Community?”, Ms. Cunning empowered students to explore critical issues, refine their research, and amplify their voices.
Recognizing the significance of this national platform, Mrs. Cunning connected students with the City of Laurel’s Department of Communications to provide invaluable mentorship. Under their guidance, students learned how to shoot and edit video footage, analyze content from multiple perspectives, and craft compelling narratives that resonate on a national stage.
Mrs. Cunning believes deeply in the power of storytelling to effect change, saying, "This competition is not just about winning; it’s about students finding their voice, thinking critically about their world, and advocating for issues that truly matter to them and their communities."
Her dedication to fostering teamwork, creativity, and technical excellence ensured that every student had the tools and confidence to rise to the challenge. From brainstorming topics ranging from climate change to racial justice, to mastering the art of interviewing and editing, Mrs. Cunning's support has left a lasting impact on both the students and the community.
