Principal's Message
What an exciting time of year at TMSS with our volleyball teams and football team doing so well and just beginning to get into playoff season. Thank you to all the family support coming out and cheering Tornados on when we host or helping with transportation when we don’t have enough GRIT mobiles.
And on that note…thank you to the SCC who helped organize families bringing teachers supper two evenings in October during our conferences. We are grateful for the generosity of our TMSS families and just the acknowledgement that conference evenings are long workdays for teachers. We had over one-third of our families come out to meet with teachers. A reminder, that if you have questions or concerns about your child’s academic progress or school experiences, you don’t have to wait until to meet with teachers. You can message through Edsby, email, or call the school to arrange to meet. Home-school communication is essential for your child’s success.
Have you been into the school or phoned our school lately? Maybe you’ve met our new administrative assistant? Welcome back to TMSS, Megan Benoit! Megan is TMSS alumni and recently returned to Tisdale with her husband. We are very happy to have our office team fully staffed again. Thank for your patience for the last two months while we all figured out how to help Ms. Lutz during the busy start up time!
In addition, welcome to Trina Stull, our new counsellor at TMSS. Trina’s caseload includes several NESD schools, but by mid-November we are expecting to see her at TMSS one day per week to help support students with their mental wellbeing. In the meantime, we have our outreach worker, Katie Adair, here four days a week supporting students, their families and offering a breakfast cart and snacks throughout the day.
In November, Ms. Will’s band classes will be organizing our annual Remembrance Day service for Friday, November 8th. It is a good time for teachers to remind students about service etiquette (formal attire, no snacks or coffees, no ballcaps or cellphones, and respectful listening) and the importance of honouring veterans who serve our nation so we can live as a democracy. If you can provide your child with a poppy for that morning, we’d appreciate it. We will have a few here at TMSS, but the Legion doesn’t provide enough for all students. If your child doesn’t have a poppy that morning, then sending a donation to the Legion’s Poppy Fund will help and we’ll do our best to arrange a poppy.
Are you using our Edsby platform? If not, call Ms. Lutz in the office so she can help you get on board. Report cards come out in November through the platform. That said, you can look at your child’s grades 24/7 using the Edsby app. Report cards shouldn’t provide any surprises for you.
Your support is appreciated,
Carmen Messer
Bus Accident
On October 28, 27 of our TMSS students from Kinistin were involved in an accident near Kinistin, on their way home from school. Some of the students and the bus driver suffered from injuries ranging from mild to serious. This accident affected 34 families from Kinistin. Our SCC is working on organizing food donations for these families and on Friday, our admin team visited these families, delivering homework packages, notes and cards from our students and staff.
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the emergency responders and health practitioners for their quick response and care to all those involved. On behalf of all of us at TMSS we are sending our healing thoughts and wishes for a quick recovery to those involved. We also thank our SCC, Reconciliation Tisdale, and Beeland COOP for donating food and treats for all families affected. We are definitely better together!
TMSS Student Communicators
Our new Student School Communicators recently began their work, meeting with our Director of Education and Communications Consultant to discuss plans for amplifying student voices. We are excited to see students highlight school activities on our website and social media—a wonderful way for them to express pride in their schools! Here's a little introduction to our TMSS School Communicators, Hannah Lewis and Dawn Bernard.
Dawn Bernard: As a student communicator, I create media through videos and posters to help community members feel more involved with the school. That means I update the community on sports events, school dress-up days, and more. School spirit has always been something that I have wanted to increase within the school, whether it be supporting our local teams or dressing up to earn GP points. I was interested in this role because this is an opportunity to reach beyond the students and into the community. If you have questions about spirit days or missed sporting events, please check out the school's Facebook page.
Hannah Lewis: I'm one of the School Communicators which means that whatever is happening within the school or sometimes the community events combined with the school, I (or Dawn) will create a post or videos that get posted throughout the school or onto the social media platforms. I was interested in the role as I’m able to do a lot of the behind the scenes when it comes to spirit days and other events. Since I’m already on the SRC, I thought that being a school communicator would help out a lot so I can combine what I know from teachers and the SRC to spread the word of events. The bonus is being able to make posters or videos of what is happening, and being able to create some sort of art.

Sarah is a great role model and always shows respect. Way to go, Sarah!
This month's Grade 8 GRIT award winner is Joye Smith. Joye shows up each day with a big smile, ready to learn and help her fellow classmates. She is a great example of what it is to be Resilient. She never gives up on her task at hand. She has also missed a bit of time to start off the year, but she works hard to ensure that she does not fall behind in her classes. She also shows a tremendous amount of Togetherness by making sure that she helps others feel welcome and when put into groups, she makes sure that everyone has a job and that everyone understands the topic. She has been a great help to her classroom environment. Keep up the great work, Joye!
This month’s GRIT award winner for grade 9 is Sophie Coulter. Sophie demonstrates our student mantra by showing Growth, Resilience, Integrity, and Togetherness every day. Sophie is always willing to help her classmates, she goes above and beyond to support her peers, and she makes new students feel welcome. We are extremely lucky to have Sophie part of the TMSS community. Congratulations
We are excited to announce that this month's Grade 10 GRIT award goes to a student who joined TMSS this year. Since her arrival, Hannah Fortier has greatly enriched her classes by demonstrating several admirable qualities, particularly her spirit of collaboration. She has been proactive in assisting classmates by sharing notes they may have missed, answering questions from her peers, and providing a supportive ear for those who need to discuss their thoughts. Hannah has truly become a valuable member of the TMSS community. Congratulations, Hannah!
The winner of this month's Grade 11 GRIT award is Karle Gonzales. Karle is a great example of a student who has shown growth and turned his year around. He is doing quality work and has improved his grades considerably. He follows instructions, uses guidelines and outlines effectively, and asks relevant questions. In addition to doing well in his academics, Karle has emerged as a leader on the football team. His defensive play has been strong and has helped the team advance to the semifinals. Great work, Karle!
This month’s Grade 12 GRIT award goes to CJ Thomas. CJ may be quiet in class, but that is because he is a conscientious student who attempts all tasks with integrity. He displays resiliency as he works through assignments. He takes great care when completing his quality assignments. CJ is always friendly, asks questions and uses class time to his full advantage. It is nice for a teacher to have a student like CJ in their class. Congratulations on the great start to the school year from all of your hard work, CJ!
Sports Updates
Cross Country Running Team
The season came to an end on Saturday, October 12th with the provincial meet at Dixon Hills (outside of Humboldt) using the Carlton Trail Ski Club cross country ski trails. Three Tornado athletes, Sawyer Pollon, Christian Huvenaars, and Max Shramko, participated and all finished in the top half of the pack. It’s the only time in the season to run in a meet with over 100 runners in the age category. It’s quite the experience to run in a group like that on those rugged trails for several kilometers. Congratulations to each of them!

Soccer
For the first time in 22 years, TMSS has a soccer team!
The senior boys had been expressing interest for the past couple years, so this was the year! High school soccer is a short season, we started practicing mid-September and finished at Regionals Oct 18th. Division A Senior Boys 4A was held at Chief John Keenatch School on Big River First Nations this year on their beautiful and scenic new pitch. Our boys were very excited to make the 3-hour trip out there leaving at 10:30 that morning and only getting back at 9:30 that evening. We may not have won our one and only game of the season against Martinsville, but it was a "win" making it there in our first season!
Thank you to Coach Nikita for the many hours you invested in our team and we hope to see you all on the pitch next year!
Grades 9-12 students, are you on Edsby?
When you are using your phone, groups show up at the bottom. You are part of either a Grad 2025, 2026, 2027 or 2028 group. This is where Mrs. Lee posts everything about careers, post-secondary, presentations, open houses, classes, etc. Please be sure you are checking regularly.
If you have any questions, please send an email (lee.kristin@nesd.ca)or an Edsby message.
Travelling Out of Canada during the School Year???
If you are planning a family trip outside the country during the school year, parents please contact Mrs. Messer. We need to know your destination and the dates of your trip in order to request access to Edsby and school email for students. Access is not permitted in all countries.
Have you noticed the progress being made on the TMSS Playscape Amphitheatre? Ashley Keays has been hard at work landscaping and it is starting to look fantastic. We are so excited about this wonderful addition to our outdoor learning space!
