Our MARCHING BAND ALSO COMPETED AND MADE IT TO THE STATE BAND FINALS!!!!!! It was the first time to make finals since 2015!!!!!!!! We will be rooting for you this weekend!!!!!
Some things to mention for the next two weeks...TRICK OR TREAT STREET is this Wednesday in the gym and free to the community. Bring those little ones in costumes for games and and treats, starting at 6 PM. Halloween is Thursday, and no Halloween costumes are allowed at CHS for the day. Please remind your students to save the costumes for neighborhood trick or treating. Next Wednesday is Parent Teacher Conferences, so please sign up for times with your students' teachers...for those of you who come in person, please come hungry and stop by the cafeteria for Turkey and Gravy dinners on us! Conferences are from 3:30-6:30, so we look forward to seeing you there!!
As I stated last week, I wanted to feature some of the cool things happening at CHS, and here is another program at CHS. Our JOURNALISM program at CHS has three different ways for students to get involved, and I wanted to highlight each of those programs. Our guest authors are Veronica Daehn-Harvey for NEWSPAPER, Kayla Jones Powell for SOCIAL MEDIA, and Mandy Beilman for YEARBOOK. , All 3 of these teachers are in our ELA department and are working hard to make journalism an amazing opportunity for our students!!! Please read on to learn more about JOURNALISM at CHS.
Warrior Pride: What makes Central High School unique?
NEWSPAPER: Newspaper is a brand new class at CHS this school year. It aims to teach students about how to report, write, and edit the news. Students are learning about beat reporting, interviewing, writing for a newspaper, production, and photography. Student work so far is being published at centralwarriorsnews.wordpress.com. The goal is to have a print product at some point in the future and a stable student staff that is eager to help share the happenings of Central High School in journalism form.
DIGITAL JOURNALISM/SOCIAL MEDIA: Digital Journalism-Social Media is a great class for upper level students interested in a possible career in the ever evolving fields of marketing, graphic design, communications, and much more. For younger students, it is a great start to your English credit pathway, as it will open up your world to more in depth courses like Newspaper and Yearbook. Students in Digital Journalism-Social Media learn the basics of journalistic skills, content creation, interview techniques, writing skills, and working within a deadline.
So far this year, students have mastered the introductory skills on Canva: a graphic design web tool to create their content. Students have produced more than 115+ designs that have been shared on one or more of our communication platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and our school website). Students will design a mix of "assigned" content as well as content they generate and create on their own after first submitting a formal proposal.
Our aim in Digital Journalism-Social Media is to present on our platforms the greatest things happening within our school. We aim to showcase our students, staff, coaches, community members, alumni, etc that truly make Central High School one of a kind. This is our inclusive approach to letting the outside world within our walls to see our truly unique school and experience all that Central has to offer.
YEARBOOK: Yearbook is a fantastic class offered to CHS sophomores, juniors, and seniors that are interested in photography, graphic design, writing, and editing. Yearbook allows students to be creative, have fun, and grow real-world skills that colleges and employers want. Skills like time management, attention to detail, collaboration and teamwork, communication, problem solving, and marketing, just to name a few. The yearbook class is a strong blend of three key areas: photography, journalism, and graphic design. Yearbook staff members are expected to photograph a variety of student activities, both on and off campus, in which they practice using DSLR cameras in both automatic and manual settings. Staff members grow their written and verbal communication skills through question generation, interview practice, and story writing, and they always aim to share the heart of the student, teacher, club, activity, or sport that they are writing about. And finally, designing the yearbook gives them a chance to grow skills in graphic design as they design page layouts to be both visually appealing, engaging, and informative. Throughout the year, the class grows together and creates the yearbook, which captures the memories and school spirit of CHS.
**Freshman who want to take Yearbook should strongly consider taking journalism or social media as a prerequisite. While it is not required, it helps when they fill out the yearbook class application, which comes out every spring. As there are outside of class time commitments, a parent signature is required on the yearbook class application.**
Thank you, Ms. Daehn-Harvey, Mrs. Jones Powell, and Mrs. Beilman for this great feature!!! We look forward to more of these features, and thank you, Warrior Families, for sharing the gift of your students with us every day, and I hope you have a fantastic week!!!!
Warm regards,
Tracy Arledge

Students can walk in or make an appointment to be seen, usually on the same day. Not only can we do the testing for multiple illnesses here, we can prescribe treatments, notify parents if a student needs to go home, or send the student back to class as appropriate. We can also administer vaccines with parent permission. We need parent/guardian permission to see any student under the age of 18, and these short forms are available in our office or online at www.chswarriorwellness.org.
