Principal's Pen
We are excited to see you at Parent-Student-Teacher conferences next week! Please prepare for conferences by following these suggestions:
Watch for a reminder email from SignUp Genius two days before your conference.
Be prompt or early for your assigned conference time.
Please bring your child to the conference.
The conference time will pass quickly. Help the teacher keep your conversation to 15 minutes. The teacher will want to give the next family their time as well.
In advance, write down any questions you have. Bring them to the conference.
Visit the Book Fair in the media center. All students get to put their name in a drawing for free book boxes, no purchase is necessary.
Claim items in the Lost-n-Found.
We are rescheduling PJ Day for Monday, February 24 and Hat Day for Tuesday, February 25. They were originally scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week when we were not in session.
As you know, we have some pretty AMAZING educators at Ridgeway!
Each year, the Columbia Fund for Academic Excellence recognizes one teacher in each area as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. This is a huge honor!
This year, our nominees are:
- Katie Triplett, Oustanding Educator K-2
- Alex Gray, Outstanding Educator 3-5
- Jazz White, Outstanding New Educator
- Amy Schirmer, Outstanding Educator in a Specialized Area
How can you help?
- Write a letter of support for one (or all) of our nominees!
- You can also have your child write/draw why they love their teacher!
- Scan and email me your letters/pictures (tgraves@cpsk12.org) or bring a physical letter to the office by March 1, 2025.
The more support we show, the more likely our amazing Ridgeway teachers are to be recognized! 🤍
Congratulations to our very own A’Niya Howard who was named by Women’s Intersport Network for Columbia’s Youth Athlete of the Year earlier this week. We are so proud of you A’Niya!!!

Unit Notes
Unit A
This week has been short, but it has been fantastic! We finally celebrated the 100th day of school, and it was fantastic. From making Fruit Loop necklaces to enjoying a special 100th-day snack, we fully embraced the day from start to finish. A big thank you to everyone who donated to help make this celebration possible!
We are excited to see everyone at the conferences next week! If you haven’t had a chance to complete the pre-conference questionnaire, please take a moment to do so. This will help us provide you with the best support during our limited conference time. If you need the link to the Google Form or would like a paper copy, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher.
Unit B
Second grade math: We have started Unit 6. We are working on representing data, multiple different kinds of number stories, addition, and subtraction. At home you can work on addition and subtraction fluency with you student.
Third grade math: We are beginning Unit 6. Your child will learn a new method for multi digit subtraction called trade-first subtraction. We will also spend time building on strategies for solving number stories.
ELA: our next reading unit focuses on where ideas for inventions come from and the value of innovation. We will compare and contrast texts throughout this unit.
Social Studies: We rescheduled out technology museum for Thursday February 27th. If you still have old modes of communication like a rotary phone or typewriter, we are accepting donations! Please bring your items to school by Wednesday. All items will be returned to you after the museum.
Unit C
4/5th grade families! We are excited to announce we will host a School GeoBee this year! Think Spelling Bee, but for geography/social studies. Students will have the option to participate in a Class GeoBee and written GeoBee qualifier, and the Top 10 will move onto the School GeoBee. Your student doesn’t need to do anything to study for the Bee, but knowing the locations of the 50 states, major US rivers and cities, as well as important US landforms will help them do well in the competition.
Specialist News
From the music room…
What a wonderful second trimester of school we have had, through weather and holidays the Ridgeway musicians continue to bring joy and cheer to every class.
Unit A has been working on fine tuning their previously learned comparatives of Loud vs. Soft and Fast vs. Slow. They have also been working on their tuneful independent singing and have grown so much in their tonality- it is a joy to hear them sing. Along with our comparatives and singing Unit A has been working on steady beat, or as we call it in the younger years- heartbeat. They have had many opportunities to perform, move to and play the heartbeat of different songs and have shown a good understanding of how the heartbeat keeps the song going.
Unit B has been doing a lot of musical reading work! From refining their skills of beat vs. rhythm to reading simple rhythms of known songs, Unit B has grown a lot in their understanding of musical theory and literacy. Along with quarter and eighth notes Unit B has added quarter rest and will soon add half note. They will be adding melodic elements of sol, mi and la very soon and with this will be able to sing and sight read many songs themselves. I am very impressed with their music literacy skills and have enjoyed seeing their thought process on how these things are all interconnected.
Unit C has worked super hard on their instrument skills this year and has really grown in their musicianship. It is a joy to have musicians that are excited to learn new things and practice new skills- so much so that some of them have taken to working on things outside of class time! True music to a music teacher's ears. Unit C will continue working with recorder but are strongly focusing on ‘ukulele now. Many 5th graders have expressed interest in signing up for an instrument in middle school and I am so excited for them!
It has been a wonderful year so far in the music room and our Ridgeway musicians continue to lead in music class with enthusiasm, passion and joy!
Sing-cerely,
Ms. Meeds
