Hello Families! October was a fun month for students in the library. Our main focus for 3rd - 6th graders was introducing them to OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books) This will be our 13th year running OBOB at Free Orchards. The great thing about OBOB at Free Orchards is every student from 3rd-6th grade can participate. We run all the battles and all the reading is done during school. For more information about OBOB, please visit this link: Oregon Battle of the Books
Fox Farm - Mrs. Newton/Fantastic Parent Volunteer
Students spent October closing-up the garden for the winter! Two new in-ground planters were installed, summer vegetables cleaned-out of beds, and fall garlic were all planted. Seed harvesting was a staple through the month too: wheat berries, calendula, lupine, corn, pumpkins and more.
Fifth grade classes welcomed guest speaker Lisa Power from the Banks Public Library to teach them about the Banks Seed Library and how to create and maintain their own seed exchange program this year too.
November will include a focus on Fox Farm’s first wheat crop. We’ve grown it, dried it, and harvested it. Next they’ll learn about grinding it into wheat, culminating in making pancakes in class!
This month will also host a bottle/can drive by the 5th and 6th grade classes. They’ll be raising funds for their year-long projects; the Seed Exchange and the greenhouse Glencoe High School will be building for Fox Farm.

October’s Fox Food Drive:
Thank you Free Orchards Foxes and families. What an amazing Fox Food Drive we had. We started the school year with 0 items in our pantry to have a full rack! With this we can provide items to our students/families. Even if our food drive is over you can still drop items to the office for example non-perishable items or any toiletries. Thank you!
Upcoming Events:
Stop by our Parent Committee meeting on November 20th to plan our next event for December. We will be meeting at the library from 5-6pm.
Free Orchards Parent Committee invites you to mark your calendar for our Fall Carnival coming November 21, 2024. There will be lots of games, prizes, food, and so much fun. Check out our flyer here! If you want to help with any games or come support us, feel free to reach out to me.
Need Resources: As the winter season and holidays are coming up, if you need any resource or assistance with: wifi, food, shelter, clothes, or any questions regarding school, please email me and I will be more than happy to help you..
Interested in volunteering? Be part of our Parent Committee! We are a group of parents who want to plan & execute fun activities/events both during and after school for our students and families. If you are interested, please complete your background check through HSD and email me.

Processing emotional situations and experiences is an essential part of learning. From natural disasters to incidents involving death, violence, or political events, classroom meetings and circles are spaces where productive conversations can happen in schools. When a topic is contentious or when students are experiencing vulnerability or heightened emotions, teachers can implement protocols to help students process while maintaining civil discourse and respect for the differing perspectives in the classroom.
