Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
Several years ago Churchill County School District set out to modernize our learning and provide our students with the choices they need to leave high school on a path of their choosing. Our staff and students have worked very hard over the years on this pathway and this past week we had the opportunity to share our progress with educators from around the country. We hosted almost 40 visitors from different parts of the nation on Monday. They arrived at CCHS and broke out from there and made visits to Lahontan Elementary, EC Best, Churchill County Middle School, and Churchill County High School.
The educators took with them lots of great ideas and remarked on how awesome our students and teachers are. It was great to go around and see so many students engaged in the work of learning.
When the site visits were over, the Modern Learning Conference continued in Reno through Tuesday.
During the conference, some ChurchillCSD staff members were given the opportunity to share many things about us. On Monday, there were three panels that featured staff from our district. The elementary teacher’s panel included Rachel Gonzales from LES and Tori. Sandberg and Heather Alves from EC Best. The secondary panel included Teachers Lance Lattin from CCHS and Angela Strittenberger from CCMS. The principal’s panel included LES Principal Kimi Melendy, CCMS Principal Victor Schoenfeldt, and CCHS Vice Principal Reema Pulsifer. The panels were great and allowed many people to see the practices in places in ChurchillCSD.
On Tuesday during the workshops, I was able to join Dr. Sue Segura from CCHS and Tammie Westergaard from the Governor’s office for a presentation on the work based learning program in place at ChurchillCSD. Reema Pulsifer and Rachel Knight from CCHS also presented a workshop on parent engagement activities at CCHS.
ChurchillCSD and staff also won some awards. ChurchillCSD was recognized for meeting all the requirements to be considered a Level 4 School in the Modern Teacher Framework. In the framework, schools move through stages of implementation through stage 7. Stage 4 is the result of hard work and dedication of the ChurchillCSD staff. Two employees were also finalists for some special awards. AG Science teacher Ryann Kulbeth was a finalist for the High School Personalized Learning Classroom. Kimi Melendy was a finalist and the winner for the category of Change Management Principal. Congratulations to both of them!
It is exciting to be welcoming March in! I encourage everyone to be at school every day and enjoy the learning that is going on!
Regards,
Derild Parsons

Message from our Partners at Care Solace 💜
March is Self-Harm Awareness Month. If a student has been hurting themselves on purpose, the real hurt is inside. Self-harm is used to cope in the moment but can end up becoming a dangerous cycle. Here are some signs that your student is vulnerable and may be self-injuring:
- Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress
- Visible cuts, scratches, or unexplained wounds
- Covering their bodies with bandages, long sleeves, or long pants
If your student needs intervention and support for self-harm and its root causes, contact Care Solace. Care Solace will navigate the mental health care system, explain options, and quickly find available providers in our local community. Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential care coordination service provided by Churchill County School District.

Weekly School Highlights 🎉
Churchill County High School 💚🌊
Churchill County High School students helped ChurchillCSD kick off the Modern Learning Conference 2025 (MLC25) on Monday, February 24. Educators from across the county received a warm welcome to ChurchillCSD at CCHS as they arrived from Reno. ROTC students, dressed in full uniform, greeted the guests and guided them through the Greenwave inflatable football helmet at the auditorium entrance. Inside, the guests were handed a swag bag that included cookies made by Alisha White and her culinary art students and wooden keychains designed, cut, and laser engraved by Jake Lewis and his students. As the guests entered the auditorium, they were shown their seats by ROTC members while the CCHS band entertained them with music. To officially kick off the welcome event, the ROTC presented the colors and the band played the National Anthem. The involvement of CCHS students set the tone for the rest of the day and the conference. Their dedication and willingness to help and be so welcoming made the event even more memorable for guests.

Barb Hickox's fifth grade class put their critical thinking skills to the test as they learned how to draw inferences by solving mock crime scenes with the help of some local professionals. Capt. Riley, Det. Sgt. Perez, Officer Aller, and Officer Alcaraz from the Fallon Police Department came in to help students solve a mock crime by assisting them in pulling forensic evidence together and writing up the criminal case using the RACE method for writing. To conclude the unit on drawing inferences, the Investigator team, Sgt. Maynez, Corporal White, and Corporal Hardin, from Churchill County Sheriff's Office came in and presented a mock crime scene. Students had to narrow down suspects using evidence found at the crime scene to solve it. The students learned a lot and had fun covering the learning targets. We would like to thank the Fallon Police Department and the Churchill County Sheriff's Office for the great job they do for our community and for helping us put evidence together to solve crimes.

This last month, students in Lisa Christy's English Language Learner program completed the annual WIDA Access test. This test assesses the students' English skills in four language domains: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. When students completed each part of the test, they chose a delicious snack. This assessment is very rigorous and time-consuming, but all of her students worked hard to perform their best on this important test and she is very proud of their progress.

Last week students in Kirby Goetsch’s Kindergarten class celebrated National Children's Dental Health Month by learning how to take care of their teeth. Every day they read a poem and identified some new ELA concept words with the short e sound, words with the long e sound, sight words, and question marks. During centers students used toothbrushes and puffy paint to find and cover sight word "cavities" on construction paper teeth, wrote sight words on laminated teeth and brushed them away with toothbrushes, labeled pictures of dental health practices, read a scholastic magazine about taking care of their teeth and decided which foods would make their teeth happy and which might make them sad. Then on their Chromebooks they played a game called "Brush Those Teeth", watched videos about tooth facts, and listened to tooth-related stories. Students also had the chance to use letter tile "teeth" to spell consonant, vowel, consonant (CVC) words and practiced writing/tracing sentences about dental health tools like floss and mouthwash. On Wednesday, students had a visit from a local hygienist who talked to the class about dental health and answered their questions about how to brush their teeth, how long they should brush their teeth, how many baby teeth they have, and if their cavities can get worse if they don't go to the dentist. Finally, to practice counting up to 20 objects, the students used mini marshmallows to create models of their mouths because most kids will have 20 baby teeth before they start losing teeth and getting their adult ones. This unit not only covered dental health but also included writing, math, creativity, and reading skills, making it a great unit all around for the students.

Octavia Merritt’s class is setting out on an adventure this March and is asking for the community’s help. The students are searching for a leprechaun and are looking for letters that lead them closer to figuring out where he might be. Merritt designed this activity to teach her students the power of written communication and to show them that connecting with people does not require the latest technology or social media. The class has already been receiving letters and surprises from various places and now Merritt is hoping to expand their reach even further in their hunt for the leprechaun. “We would love for friends, families, and the Fallon community to help spread the word and even participate by sending us a letter about where you may have seen the leprechaun,” Merritt said. “This is just a great way for my young students to see how we can communicate with others by sending letters through the mail and it has been so exciting for them to see where the letters come from and I am looking forward to seeing what responses we get for leprechaun spotting.” Anyone interested in sending letters, postcards, small notes, clues, and stories about the leprechaun can send them to Mrs. Octavia Merritt’s class at NELC: 340 Venturacci Lane; Fallon, Nevada, 89406. Let’s rally together and help these young students and make their St. Patrick’s Day even more special.

LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Bed Bugs
Winter seasonal changes bring about infestations and household inconveniences.
Bed bugs are a nuisance, but they are not known to cause or spread disease. They are usually
active at night and can irritate the human skin. The bite is initially painless, but it may become
swollen and itch, much like a mosquito bite.
The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined, as they may be found in many places,
including hotels, hospitals, theaters and schools. Finding a bed bug does not mean that the
building is infested. Adults & children can unknowingly bring bed bugs into buildings,
including schools. In response to this seasonal concern, Churchill County School District
continually works to identify pests, provide inspections of schools and have licensed pest
control specialists treat classrooms and schools as appropriate.
If you have experienced bedbugs in your home, we strongly recommend seeking professional
assistance from a qualified pest control company. If your child has any bites, you should contact your health care provider.
Further information on preventing bed bugs are available on the following website.
