VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteer hours are not a requirement to graduate from Poway Unified. Many clubs like National Honor Society may require volunteer service hours but it is not mandatory for graduation. There are still many great reasons to volunteer. Giving your time to different organizations builds community pride. The tasks you complete while volunteering can build skills and expand your resume. Colleges also like to see applicants with diversified experiences that reflect their passions as well. The last reason you may want to consider volunteering your time is that it just feels good!

SAMAHAN'S HIGH SCHOOL CONFERENCE
51st Annual High School Conference on Saturday, December 7th, 2024. AB Samahan’s High School Conference is a free all-day event aimed at promoting higher education and showing local Filipino high school students the different opportunities and resources offered for students at San Diego State University and within the San Diego community. Additionally, our conference will give high school students a glimpse as to what student life is like at San Diego State University.
Besides higher education, we aim to promote Filipino culture, as it is our personal backbone. We aim to hold workshops that not only promote academics, but also creative expression, cultural awareness, and many more.
Here is some general information about AB Samahan and our High School Conference for you and your students:
So what is AB Samahan?
Andrés Bonifacio Samahan (AB Samahan) is a non-profit Filipino-American-based organization from San Diego State University established in 1971. As one of the largest organizations on campus, we strive to preserve Filipino culture through community service, political awareness, academic excellence, and social activities. For over 50 years, we have cultivated and enlightened strong, young leaders.
What happens at High School Conference?
Every year our organization comes together to organize one of our largest events, the High School Conference. The purpose of AB Samahan’s High School Conference is to promote higher education and show local San Diego high school students the different opportunities and resources offered to students at San Diego State University. Additionally, our conference will give high school students a glimpse into what student life is like at San Diego State University. Our conference will be an all-day event and will have several different components, which will include: a keynote speaker, workshops, and a talent show. Workshops will cover an array of different topics such as the admissions process for the CSU system, resources available to students, cultural identity, social issues in modern society, and more.
While the mission of Andrés Bonifacio Samahan is centralized on empowering Filipinx youth, attendees do not have to be Filipino to participate, and we encourage all underserved and marginalized youth to attend.
There are two MINIMUM $250 scholarships available: one of which will be awarded to a short answer response to a written prompt, and the other will be awarded to the winner of the Talent Show.
Please share this registration form with your students, which also includes a link to the talent show application form. Once registered, they will be sent a parental permission waiver, a scholarship application form, and a registration form to choose from our educational workshops. This is a great opportunity for them to grow academically, professionally, and learn more about carrying their culture into their futures. We hope to see your students at our High School Conference!
Students can register at: https://forms.gle/rp5ZnAb7ZuCAZHHh9
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at education@absamahan.org.
