I want to take a moment to brag about the locals that participated in our summer organizing program. Ashwaubenon, Luxemburg-Casco, De Pere, Marinette, Appleton, Pulaski, Sheboygan, and Seymour all did amazing work! Their teams welcomed new teachers to their schools and their union. Every summer I am floored by the thoughtfulness and creativity of the members working on these teams. Every so often I meet someone who remembers fondly how they were welcomed to their union by a veteran member and given important guidance. It’s so beautiful to be making these future memories now and ensuring new educators find their way. Kudos to everyone who took on this work!
You may have already heard, but we have an election this November. We’ll have plenty of opportunities to knock on doors of your fellow educators to turn out the pro-public education vote!
I’m hesitant to say this as someone who has worked in union and community organizing for over fifteen years but Tim Walz as our potential Vice President has me….dare I say, excited? I’m excited to bring real midwestern values to the national conversation. Walz has been able to do great things in Minnesota with programs that show our values like paid medical leave, free lunches and breakfasts for students. These are the things we should be doing because we care about one another. So yeah, this jaded old organizer is happy about that.
