From the Principal
April, 2023
Hello, Lodi High School Families -
I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Spring Break. The weather feels like it's finally turning the corner and it would be great to know that we are done with any potential days that the weather will prevent us from having in-person school. However, if for some reason we need another snow day, the district will automatically go to a virtual day to avoid adding any additional days at the end of the school year. Here is a link to our Virtual Day expectations for your viewing.
In this month's version of the Blue Devil Bulletin be sure to read about our upcoming 9th and 10th grade PreACT day coming up on Tuesday, April 11. This will be an electronic test where our students will by using a Chromebook, so it's imperative that they have their Chromebooks charged up and ready to go.
You can also look forward to reading about the many celebrations and great things our students are doing to make us extremely proud. Thank you, parents, for always supporting their endeavors.
Have a great April,
Joe Jelinek

SPRING PLAY
The spring play “These Shining Lives” was schedule to open at the Lodi High School on Friday, March 10 at 7:00 pm, but unfortunately because of inclement weather there first performance was moved to Saturday, March 11 at 7:00 pm and their final performance was Sunday, March 12 at 2:00 pm. Both performance were unforgettable.
“These Shining Lives” was written by Melanie Marnich. This theatrical experience will bring to light some of the things that the Radium girls experienced in the 1920’s and 1930’s. These brave women changed the worker’s compensation laws in the United States of America, with the lawsuit against Westclocks and Radium Dial. This work is a beautifully written account of the bravery, friendship and heartbreak of four amazing women.
In this year's play, there were 25 students involved in the production, and they are working very hard to bring this historical play to the stage. According to the director, Ms. Beanie Ludlum, the students have touched her heart and she hopes that the community will be as impressed as she is.
Great job student cast and crew!! LHS is so proud of you!

FFA Update - March
The FFA had two big tasks to complete in March. First off, five members worked hard to fill out applications highlighting their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. Josie Varney and Paige Sweatt completed applications in Dairy Placement meaning that they work in the dairy industry for their SAE. Both show dairy cattle - Paige with a ton of experience and Josie just getting started. Natalie Kieffer filled an application for Small Animal Entrepreneurship for her show rabbits. Natalie Detert filled out an Equine Entrepreneurship proficiency for the horse that she leases and rides. Finally, Summer Rake filled out her Swine Placement proficiency for her family’s pigs. Congratulations and good luck to all participants.
Secondly, 17 members competed across four different areas in Career Development Events (CDE’s) at UW-Platteville on the 16th. Summer Rake, Vivian Beld, Ava Ballweg, and Brook Endres competed in Floriculture. Paige Sweatt, Maddie Hellenbrand, Lexie Bishop, and Rylie Wilcox competed in Dairy Cattle Evaluation. Brayden Kurt, Roman Richardson, Weston Olsen, and Bryce Skalitzky competed in Ag Mechanics and Technology. Finally, Saara Nori, Sam Leatherberry, Aiden Valencia, Bennett Rasmussen, and Jaylee Busser competed in Milk Quality. Congratulations to all competitors and thank you for representing our school!
Lodi FFA also made up our pie and ice cream social for teacher appreciation that was canceled due to weather during FFA Week. Thank you to all Lodi School District staff that help our students succeed! Looking ahead to April, we have our biggest chapter event with Ag Products Day/Day on the Farm on April 14th.
Thailand Exchange Study Tour a Success!
The following is a testimonial written by Paula Tonn whose family was able to host two Thai students.
Did you know???
The School District of Lodi has a totally amazing and unique international exchange program with schools in three different countries: Germany, Spain, and Thailand. These last few weeks my family has had the opportunity to host two wonderful Thai boys from Sa-Nguan Ying School in Suphan Buri Thailand.
Lodi friends, if you can, this experience can be literally life-changing. Take a chance! Do it! Watching my kids navigate “getting to know you” social situations, learn how to be gracious hosts by attending to the needs of others, and inquiring and noting both differences and similarities among kids from the other side of the planet was really special. Also it’s fun! So much fun! Lifelong friends is not an overstatement.
Anyone can be an amazing host! Even busy people! Even introverts! Even people with messy houses! Please don’t let money be a barrier either. There is a privately supported fund to support both hosts, and those who want to travel and who are in financial need.
I’ve been involved with the Thai exchange for over 10 years in different capacities, and it has enriched my life and my career so much. It’s one of the best things our little school district has to offer and I am so proud to be a part of it! Yet I had never hosted the actual students before. Hosting these kids has been a total blessing for me, Peter and the kids. It was simply unforgettable in the best of ways.
Thank you to all the people over the years within the School district of Lodi administration, Board of Education, teachers, host families, and traveling students for continuing this fantastic legacy!

Food Service
Greetings from the Food Service Department!
Finally, spring is here! Thank you to everyone for making our specials successful this last month. Our pancake/yogurt/strawberry breakfast parfait was a hit, as were our homemade soups, chicken fajitas, southwest cheeseburgers with chipotle mayonnaise and homemade Pico de Gallo. Our Harvests of the Month were kiwi, cabbage and cayenne pepper. No one asked for the cayenne pepper but the kiwis and homemade coleslaw on the salad bar were given a thumbs up. We took your feedback about having donuts more often and we are doing Long John Fridays. For St. Patrick’s Day, they were green! We hope you enjoyed them! We are looking forward to some new specials in April. We will be serving baby kale and radish microgreens on the salad bar courtesy of the FFA department. Come in and give them a try! They put a lot of work into growing and harvesting them for us. Thank you FFA!
I am still looking for student volunteers for the Food Council so please come see me in the kitchen if you are interested and share your voice about the menu!

Vaping Resources:
Children's Wisconsin and education/prevention surrounding Vaping Children's Wisconsin was one of the first health care organizations in the country to sound the alarm on vaping after several teens were treated for severe lung injuries. Since then, they have worked to provide resources to help teens understand the potential dangers of vaping.
Keeping Hydrated:
Please encourage your student to bring a water bottle everyday for school.
Here are some facts to share with your student about the importance of drinking more water.
Every part of your body needs water. In fact, water makes up 60% of body weight.
Dehydration happens when there is not enough water in your body.
Mild dehydration can cause headaches, nausea and fatigue (tiredness).
If you are getting enough water you’ll rarely feel thirsty. Your urine will also be clear or slightly yellow. Dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration
Drinking water is one of the simplest things you can do to be healthier
