Week of May 27, 2024
Graduation This Week!
Dear River Hill Families,
Happy Memorial Day! On this Memorial Day, thank you for taking a moment to honor and remember our servicemen and servicewomen who answered America's call to service and paid the ultimate price.
This week is exciting—GRADUATION DAY!! The commencement for the Class of 2024 will take place on Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at Merriweather Post Pavilion. This past week was full of multiple rehearsals to ensure our graduates were prepared for their big day. Seniors MUST ARRIVE by 10:00 a.m. for check-in. Failure to do so could result in their name being removed. We have to check in everyone! Parking info may be found here.
In addition to the big day on Wednesday for seniors and their families, the other members of our school community need to know that we have an early dismissal FOR ALL STUDENTS on Wednesday. Please make a note of this early closing!
School Closes at 9:50 am on Wednesday, May 29
The schedule for Wednesday is below. It will be a “HawkTime” day with no instruction taking place.
Period 1 – 7:50 - 8:20
Period 2 – 8:25 - 8:55
Brunch – 8:55 - 9:10
Period 3 – 9:15 - 9:50
As we bade farewell to our seniors last week, an unfortunate incident tainted an otherwise fantastic year. The Class of 2024, known for their enthusiasm and school spirit, planned a harmless prank—filling our hallways with desks. Unfortunately, this prank escalated beyond control, resulting in the trashing of several teachers' classrooms. This behavior was unacceptable!
However, there is a bright side to this situation. The senior class, recognizing the severity of their actions, expressed genuine remorse. They took responsibility, cleaned up the mess, and personally apologized to the affected staff members. Their response to this incident showed a commendable willingness to make amends.
While the staff was initially hurt by these actions, they are slowly coming around and forgiving our seniors. This incident serves as a reminder of the thin line between a senior prank and vandalism. It is an important lesson in understanding the impact of our actions on others and the importance of respect and responsibility.
Our tennis and track teams finished their seasons in award-winning fashion! Tennis took home the regional championship, finished second at states, and captured state titles in boys' and girls' doubles. Congratulations to Roger He and Carson Campbell for their boys' doubles state title and Adelaide Houston and Adele Lair for capturing the girls' doubles state title. We are so proud of you!
In track and field, Karell Clement finished 6th in the 100m and 200m at the State Championships. Lauren Virmani finished 4th in the 800m and 3rd in the 1600m. Marella Virmani finished 4th in the 1600m. In the boys 4x100, our team finished 4th in the state. Congratulations to Yusuf Shabazz, Nicolas Robertson, Ryan Rimmer, and Karell Clement. In the girls 4x400, River Hill finished 6th in the state. Congratulations to Dylan Watson, Madison Berge, Nikita Mohan, and Marella Virmani. Our girls 4x800 team continued their dominance, finishing 1st and capturing the state title. Congratulations to Lauren Virmani, Nikita Mohan, Alyssa Mattes, and Marella Virmani. In the long jump, Saniya Carter finished 7th in the state, and Camille Nesmith finished an impressive 3rd in the triple jump. Congratulations on a great season!
On another note, County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball stopped by River Hill to recognize sophomore John Willets for his impressive work with Suits 4 Students. John spearheaded the effort to collect gently used professional attire (suits, ties, shoes, etc.) for students at the Homewood Center. These items will be used by students and their families for job interviews and other employment opportunities. If you would like to contribute, reach out at suits4students.inquiries@gmail.com. Well done, John. We are so proud of you!
Finally, juniors Victoria Qin and Lauren Jee from the River Hill SGA presented at the Board of Education last Thursday. They highlighted the various student events from the school year (Homecoming, pep rallies, food drives, etc.) to provide board members a glimpse into student life at River Hill. They did a fantastic job of presenting. Thank you, Victoria and Lauren.
Have a fantastic week!
Warmest regards,
Robert A. Motley
