Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Families, Students & Staff,
One of the aspects of our school community that I value the most is our diversity. While our 2023-2024 State Report Card data is still embargoed I am able to share our demographics from that report. We are 62% White, 12% multi-racial, 11% Hispanic, 10% Asian, 3% Black, and 1% Native American, and 1% Pacific Islander. 7% of our students are English Language Learners (who may speak 2-5 other languages), 8% are students with disabilities (and may be twice exceptional ), and nearly 1 in 10 of our students are experiencing poverty. As a school community we speak 42 different languages.
As an inclusive urban public school, we celebrate many holidays and cultural traditions as well as awareness activities. In October alone we, as a collective, celebrate Hindu, Jewish, Pagan, and Wiccan holidays, as well as other observances such as Navratri, A nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, which takes place October 3–12. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, and took place October 3–4 and Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, a day of atonement and repentance, takes place October 11–12. Samhain, A Pagan and Wiccan holiday takes place October 31st.
October raises awareness through the annual International Day of Non-Violence, which marks Mahatma Gandhi's birthday and promotes non-violence and peaceful resistance, and took place October 2nd, World Mental Health Day raises awareness of mental health issues around the world, and takes place October 10th. National Coming Out Day celebrates LGBTQ+ individuals who have come out, and takes place October 11, 2024, Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the cultures, histories, and contributions of Native Americans, and takes place October 14th. Our state honors that day in part through the annual Statewide In-Service Day for public employees, a day when many of us have had the opportunity to learn more about Tribal Histories. We want to wish all who are celebrating this month happy holidays, and share our appreciation for all who are working to raise awareness of the dangers of oppression, othering, and violence, especially when our youth are targeted.
Peace to all & Go Cards!

Movies at Lincoln
Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Lincoln is hosting a free screening of the movie Banned Together
Description: Banned Together follows three young women during their senior year of high school as they fight hostile community members and school board officials to reinstate these banned books. We witness their evolution from local to national activists as they advocate at school board meetings, sit down with national politicians, famous authors and constitutional scholars, and ultimately, speak on stage at the Right to Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago.
As we follow their activist journey, Banned Together illuminates the radical political forces vying for control of public education and the nationwide resistance to their efforts.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd, 6:00 - 8:00 PM | Lincoln High School
Join students and families from our community for a free event to watch Screenagers Next Chapter: Addressing Mental Health in the Digital Age. Cheer is off to a great start with a brand new head coach taking the reins. We are up to almost 30 cheerleaders supporting the football team and learning routines! It’s so great to have such great spirit on the sidelines. Keep it up, Cards!
The Boys Soccer team started League play with a strong 2-0 record, improving their overall record to 6-3-1. They are currently tied for first in the PIL, and have the least goals allowed in the League with 7. Great job Cardinal defense! The Lincoln Cross Country team has been on fire with a win across all boards at the PIL League meet at Fernhill this past Wednesday. Chicago was a great opportunity for our Varsity squad to travel to and compete at the Palatine Invite. The Varsity girls finished 3rd overall lead by three girls finishing in the top 10. Our boys were led by Finn Lee who was 11th and guided them to a ninth place finish. This Friday, our Cards are gearing up for the Rose City Championship!

Girls Soccer senior night is planned for October 24th vs. Franklin at home where they’ll celebrate their 2 seniors Neve Erdman and Annabel Porter.
Lincoln Dance WOWed with their performances at the past 2 football games. Check them out during every football halftime this year! They are looking forward to hosting a youth clinic on 10/26-10/27 right here at Lincoln. Please email bnorris@pps.net with any questions!

Supports for Families
These are challenging times. We get it! Lincoln students in FlockFeast Service Club have been teaming up with Clay Street Table Food Pantry to help supply families with food. Food will be bagged by students and can either be picked up at a local pantry (1314 SW Park Ave.) or at Lincoln High School. If pick up isn't possible, we may be able to deliver to a few families. Please let us know if you are interested, and a volunteer with Clay Street Table Pantry or FlockFeast will follow up and get details about what kinds of food would be helpful. We are respectful and conscientious of privacy. Please fill out both forms if you are interested.
Estos son tiempos difíciles. ¡Lo entendemos! Los estudiantes de Lincoln de FlockFeast se han asociado con Clay Street Table Food Pantry (despensa de alimentos) para ayudar a proporcionar alimentos (comida) a las familias. Staff ShoutOuts
Kudos to Ranjani Krishnan…CS/CTE teachers from PPS have now been accepted into a professional development (PD) program that we applied for (details below). The sessions will be held online every Tuesday, starting September 24th and running through November 19th, from 4 PM to 6 PM. One of the main goals of this PD is to support our efforts in retaining historically underserved students in our intermediate and advanced CS classes through the use of games—not typical shooter games, but ones that drive social change or act as agents of social justice.
Congratulations to LHS SS teachers Blair Hennessey & Xóchitl López-Truss who were selected to participate in the MESD Teacher Fellowship and Learning Series Social Science for a Better World. She will be working with educators across our region to create lessons that embed Oregon Black History, Japanese American History, Latine History, Tribally-Specific and Place-Based Histories, and Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights education.
Kudos to LHS Speech & Debate Head Coach Ben Harrison who led our team/program to earn significant recognition from the National Speech & Debate Association. Students earn Honor Society points and degrees based on competitions, leadership, and service activities which contribute to our school’s strength points. LHS received more than 150 strength points last year which moved our school’s program into the prestigious “100 Club”. Lincoln HS Speech & Debate was recognized as a “program that teaches essential skills including communication, research, listening, writing, and organization.” Way to go Ben Harrison and Speech & Debate Cards!

Alumni In the News
We are all mourning the loss of LHS Alum John Herman. John was on the Sesquicentennial Steering Committee helping us plan activities and fundraisers. He was an avid supporter of the Arts and PopCycles in particular. LHS has lost a true gem.
LHS is proud of Alum JT Flowers who was just appointed to the TriMet Board. JT is a key part of the leadership team working for the Albina Vision Trust, and was a Rhodes Scholar & Truman Fellow after graduating from Yale University. Way to go JT!

Student Opportunities
Host an Italian student next spring semester, enjoy a true cultural exchange! Your child will be invited to Italy in the summer of 2025!
Meet Niccolò, an Italian student looking for a family next spring semester at Lincoln HS.
A caring, thoughtful, friendly boy, with his sociable personality and open mind, Niccolò makes friends easily and loves to explore new countries and traditions. Always ready to support the others, he enjoys making people feel comfortable and happy. Niccolò learnt from tennis to be disciplined and determined, from basketball and soccer the team spirit. A very good skier, he enjoys any sport, hiking, running, biking, sailing, kayaking, and is excited to try new experiences like camping, rafting… Music fills his life, but he also likes movies, art, cooking, loves animals and enjoys playing with kids. He would experience volunteering in his new community. Niccolò was brought up as an only child and dreams to experience life with an American sibling. He has a close bond with his parents and is willing to give the same care to his American family.
Ergon devotes great care to selecting students and matching them with host families. For parents
and children alike, the experience of sharing their home with an Italian student often leads to lifelong friendships. To complete the cultural exchange, your son or daughter will enjoy an-all expense paid Italian vacation to visit the family of your Italian student in the summer of 2025, and Ergon sponsors
the flight!
Former Lincoln host families will be happy to share their experience with you!
To know more, please e-mail info@ergon-se.org and visit www.ergon-se.org. We look forward to
hearing from you. Thanks!
