HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year in the United States as a recognition of the contributions that Hispanic Americans have made to the development of our Nation.
What started in 1968 as a one-week celebration, nowadays is a full month from September 15th through October 15th. The selection of these specific dates is because seven Latin American countries celebrate their Independence days during that period: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on the 16th, and Chile on the 18th. Also, Columbus Day, or the Discovery of the Americas is on October 12th.
10 FACTS ABOUT HISPANICS IN THE UNITED STATES

4.1.2 million is the number of Hispanics or Latinos 18 years and older who are veterans of the United States armed forces in 2019.
5. Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas have a population of more than 1 million or more Hispanic residents.

Are you interested in Governor's School?? Or want to know more about what that looks like? Check out the information below. If this is something you are interested in, please let Mrs. Stallings or Mrs. Thomas know.
The Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students in the nation. The program began in 1963 as the brainchild of several North Carolina educators and leaders with the goal of providing the gifted students of the state with an experience that would broaden their educational horizons by presenting them with cutting edge ideas and theories. Each summer, selected students are invited to Governor’s School to help build a learning community during a four week session. Students are encouraged to explore and ask questions, with the purpose of learning for its own sake and discovering new possibilities that complement their high school instruction, without the regular pressures of tests, scores and grade point averages. The Governor’s School emphasizes collaborative efforts in all disciplines.
