February 2025
A note from Ms. Alicia
Dear Island Montessori Families,
As we step into February, a month often associated with love and kindness, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the warmth and support you have shown this year. The care you show for our students and staff is a true reflection of the values we strive to instill in our children.
Thank you for your continued partnership in creating an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and loved. Let’s continue to lead with kindness and foster a culture of care—both in our school and beyond.
With appreciation,
Alicia Rheel

Realization: The Next Step in Our Year of Discovery
So far in our journey through this year of discovery, we have explored two important concepts: exploration and observation. These phases have encouraged students to engage with their environment, ask questions, and notice the details that make their surroundings meaningful. Now, we move into the next phase of discovery—realization.
After time has been provided for exploration and observation, something remarkable occurs: students begin to realize the connections between their actions, their learning, and the world around them. Realization is a transformative moment of awareness—a deepening of understanding that often sparks curiosity and inspires action.
This stage of realization fosters personal growth and collaboration. Students may begin to understand how their unique skills and perspectives contribute to the community, whether it is in the classroom or beyond. This aligns beautifully with Montessori’s emphasis on service learning. Service learning provides opportunities for students to apply what they have learned to real-world situations, fostering responsibility, compassion, and leadership.
We encourage families to support realization at home by asking your child about their insights and how they feel they can contribute to their community.
Want to learn more? Join Kelly Henrikson and Blair Williams for our next family workshop on February 7th after morning drop off in Corrigan’s cottage, 8:30-9:30. We’ll take this time to connect and dive into service learning in the Montessori environment. We’ll conclude by working together to do a special service learning project supporting Nourish NC.
