Message from CAFE VI President, Stewart Story
I recently became President of CAFE Vancouver Island and look forward to working with your over the next few years as we continue to grow our chapter, offer excellent programs, increase Personal Advisory Group (PAG) participation and keep our chapter vibrant.
The most important task for our board is to be responsive to members’ needs and interests so that CAFE membership is relevant for you and your business. Before long we will begin to plan the program for the 2016/17 season and I invite your input. What would you like us to offer? We welcome your suggestions at vancouverisland@cafecanada.ca
You can be effective in helping to shape our chapter in other ways as well. Help us to get the word out. The best way for us to grow our membership is through referrals from people like you. When we receive referrals we arrange an informal meeting with the business to discuss the benefits of membership so that they can determine if it is a match for their interests.
An excellent way to introduce new family businesses to CAFE is through event attendance. If a CAFE member is coming to an event and wants to bring a family business along, just email our office to make arrangements – we’ll give them the member price on a one-time basis so that they can check us out.
Do you have your very own mini board of directors? A team of people you trust who have had similar family business experiences? Someone you can depend on to offer a different perspective or just listen? If not, you are missing out on CAFE’s greatest value benefit, the Personal Advisory Group (PAG). Arrange for a meeting to get more details vancouverisland@cafecanada.ca
Many of you are aware of CAFE Canada’s interest in centralizing CAFE. At our AGM in September, the membership had the opportunity to hear a board presentation on the centralization model. Many good questions followed before the membership voted on their response to this proposed structure. The members present unanimously opposed this model and this information has been conveyed to CAFE Canada. The board continues to engage in discussions with other chapters who have concerns. We will keep you updated.
Have a good year and remember that we are always receptive to hearing from you. We want to celebrate your successes, milestones and news so let us know of anything we can include in our newsletter. CAFE is really all about you.

Associated Sheet Metal Family Business Profile
L to R: Fred, Anne, Steve, Natasha & Ramon Farmer
Associated Sheet Metal is a second generation family run business, celebrating their 50th year in 2015. It was founded by Ray Farmer and Alf Kobley in Esquimalt in 1965, then sold to Ray's three sons, Fred, Raymond and Stephen, upon Ray's retirement in 1995. The sons moved the business to much larger premises in Keating Industrial Park on the Saanich Peninsula in 1996. They worked in the business in their teens, then became ticketed journeymen in the sheet metal trade, now having accumulated 120 years’ experience between themselves. Sister Anne and Stephen's daughter Natasha also work in the office.

Your Own Mini-Board of Directors
Probably the most common challenge family business members face is isolation – it is often difficult to discuss problems with other family members, and those outside family business often don’t understand the unique dynamics of family enterprise.
CAFE’s Personal Advisory Group (PAG) meet the challenge head on by providing an unparalleled opportunity to discuss succession, business management, strategy and family issues with other members of family businesses.A CAFE Personal Advisory Group (PAG) is a group of 8-12 individuals, each from a family member company, who agree to meet regularly to share personal and business ideas and help each other overcome problems. It provides the group's members with expert, objective and intimate advice in an atmosphere of mutual trust and support. PAG's are open to all family members who are active in the business. Each family member will be in a different group, and there are no competing businesses in a group. READ MORE or email vancouverisland@cafecanada.ca for more information.
