Maplewood Memo
May 29, 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Good afternoon Maplewood Families,
With only two full weeks of school remaining, things are getting really fun around here. We are getting excited about the grade 5 variety show, field day, step-up day, grade 5 promotion, end of year assembly, field trips, and so much more! With all the excitement, we have noticed the typical rise in unexpected behavior this time of year. Please remind your child(ren) that they need to continue to be safe, kind and responsible while at school. Also, please be sure to get them to bed early so they are well rested for the big full days we have planned for them.
This Friday, our spring testing window closes. We will be digging into the data to see who may need a little extra boost at the beginning of next year and who has made gains. In doing this, we readjust our systems of support across the school so that we can meet every child’s needs as best as possible. Next week I will share some data with you in the next Maplewood Memo. Or, if you would like to join a conversation about the data, please join us at the next Site Council meeting on Monday, June 3rd at 5:30 at this link: https://meet.google.com/dhd-yfzc-rbr. If you are interested in joining Site Council for next year, please let me know. We are in need of some parents as we only have two on the council. The more parents we have the more feedback we can work with. Thank you to Robin Roemer and Katie Unger for stepping up this year to be on Site Council!
We also need a new Family Advisory Council on Education (FACE) member to represent Maplewood (contact Katie Unger katie.unger3@gmail.com if interested) The purpose of this group is 1) to provide input about PPS’ Instructional Priorities and initiatives, and 2) serve as a liaison to bring information back to your site council and school community and also bring topics of interest from the school community to this district-wide council. Importantly, the Family Advisory Council on Education provides representatives the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with others from across PPS about the teaching and learning priorities that impact their students and the entire school community.
Volunteering is essential for our school community to function as it does. Thank you to all of you who volunteered this school year. It has been an amazing year together. If you volunteered this year, in any capacity, please join us at the Volunteer Tea on Monday, June 3rd from 7:50am - 8:30am in the Library. Please fill out this Volunteer Tea RSVP
Please be sure to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. If I don’t know about it, I can’t fix it!
Thank you,
Kit

Successful School Survey
Each year, we gather student, staff, and family feedback through the Successful Schools Survey. The results help our school understand the needs of your students, staff, and families, as well as support the development of your school continuous improvement plans (SCIP). We want to hear from you! Your voice matters! On May 6th, the survey window opens. Be on the lookout for emails and texts with the link to the survey. Thanks!

Carnival Update
“Wow, what a night! The Carnival Committee would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the 2024 Maplewood Elementary School Carnival such a success. It was great to see all the students (both past and present), families, and staff enjoying the evening. Special thanks to Principal Galloway for taking a pie in the face, to Rod Thompson and his fantastic band for providing great music, MC Dan Hirai for keeping the night going, all our wonderful game and food station volunteers, Portland Fire and Rescue for bringing the engine by, and to our sponsors including: Sunny’s Legendary Frozen Yogurt, WinCo, Dairy Hill Ice Cream, Les Schwab Tires, John’s Marketplace, SuperPlay, and Fred Meyer. Together we raised over $7300 for our community and created priceless memories. We can’t wait to do it again next year!”
Thanks You,
Cafeteria/Nutrition
A reminder that breakfast and lunch is now FREE to ALL students at Maplewood! If your child has not had a meal with me before, I can walk them through the process. Students are very helpful showing new kids how to go through the line also. Even if they have breakfast at home, they can get breakfast here and use it for snack later. Please remember, milk is NOT free unless getting the whole meal.
As we near the end of the school year I will need to be using up things in my freezer. So, there may be days when I serve 20 burgers, for example, with whatever is the main menued item that day. If the main menu is different, I will try to get notice out. I just letting you know there may be days when I have small amounts to offer. Not everyone will get that offer but everyone will still get the menued options.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your support.
