Heartland Happenings - November 10, 2024
We had another great week at the Heart! There's just so much going on these days and I want to make sure that you are informed. Some highlights include the following:
- Thank you, thank you, thank you to those that were able to donate to our Thunderhawk Fly High Fundraiser! We spent all of last week celebrating how successful we were and, as you can see from the graphic below, we exceeded our goal by 23%! As a reminder, money raised will go to help celebrate our students and staff, fund teacher grants and grade level incentives, and fulfill our teacher requests to provide meaningful enrichment for our students! This year, we've laid the groundwork for something that is sure to become an annual tradition! Thank you again, Heartland community, for helping to support our school
- We would like to extend an invitation to any Veterans we have in our Heartland community to attend our Veterans Day Assembly. Our assembly is tomorrow, 11/11/24, will begin at 9:15 a.m. and will last about an hour. A breakfast reception will be held before the assembly starting at 8:45pm. If our students' parents, grandparents, or any other family members are Veterans, we would like to honor them by inviting them and one guest member accompanying them to sit in our special reserved VIP section for the presentation. You will be recognized by the students, staff, and the entire Edmond community for your service to this great country.
- This week in National School Psychologist Week! Madison Barrow-Jenkins is Heartland's full-time school psych and she does such a wonderful just of working with our students to ensure that their academic, behavioral, and social/emotional needs are met. If you've ever attended a meeting with Mrs. Barrow-Jenkins you know how thorough she is and how much she cares for our Hawks! This week, we will celebrate all of the amazing work she does for our Heartland community!
- The Scholastic Book Fair has been extended one more day through Monday, November 11th! Because we were out of school last Monday for severe weather, we wanted to make sure that our Hawks have the opportunity to visit the book fair! Be sure to see the information below for details on how to purchase and support our Heartland library!
- Our "Hearts of Heartland" committee is kicking off their canned food drive starting November 11th and running through December 6th. Non-perishable food items donated will go to support our Heartland backpack program and help ensure that our students with food insecurities are supported. Items can be delivered to each student's advisory teacher. If you would like to learn more about or sign up for Heartland's backpack program, please click the button below.
- Basketball season starts this week! Our Hawks will take on the Cimarron Panthers @ Cimarron on Monday (11/11) and the Cheyenne Mustangs @ Cheyenne on Thursday (11/14). We will host our first home game next Monday (11/18) against the Central Tigers! 7th grade girls will kick us off each night at 4:30pm, 7th grade boys at 5:30pm, 8th grade girls at 6:30pm, and 8th grade boys will finish things off at 7:30pm. We are looking forward to fun and exciting season!
Two more weeks before we reach Thanksgiving Break! As always, should you have an questions, ideas, or suggestions please feel free to reach out to our office!

Dear Parents and Families:
Get Ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become bolder, prouder, and stronger readers. AND… as always, every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Tuesday Nov 5 - Monday Nov 11, from 7:20 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. in the media center:
Say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.

Afternoon Parent Pick-Up
Just a reminder, if you are going to pick up your student at the end of the day you must do so before 2:00pm. Our front office is really busy trying to tie up loose ends, fielding lots of phone calls and ensuring that all messages have been delivered to students. It has been hard to accommodate the parents that want to pick up their child right before the dismissal bell.
Additionally, please be sure to pick up your student on the South side of the building via the car pick up line. Many parents are making alternate accommodations for their child to meet them on the East side of the building near the tennis courts, in Frontier's parking lot, and even in ACTS 2 parking lot trying to avoid the car pick up line. I promise you, the line goes very quickly and there is ample supervision so that we can ensure that all of our Hawks are safe. Please ensure that you are following our procedures and guidelines.Thank you for your understanding. Ms. Johnson
Thanks, Mrs. Seimer, For Your Work With Our 6th Grade Hawks! We Appreciate You!
ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
Now that we are in the process of running eligibility for OSSAA activities - there always tends to be some confusion as to when a student can and can not participate. Here are some bullet points to help define when a student can and can not participate.
- Eligibility is run mid-week. For example - we run eligibility on Thursday morning based on grades posted on Wednesday evening. If a student is listed as "ineligible" - that means they can not participate in any OSSAA games scheduled for the next calendar week of Sunday - Sunday. By OSSAA rules - students can still practice during that time. However, individual coaches may have other team rules regarding practice.
- Probation vs. Ineligible. The first week a student has a grade that qualifies them for the eligibility report - they are listed as "on Probation"... At that point in time - they can still participate and play in games. (Again - team rules may be more strict) If the student raises the grade by the next eligibility report run - their name comes off the list and they are good to go. If there is still a grade in question - the student becomes ineligible.
- If a student is listed as ineligible - AND - raises their grade (yay!!) the next time there is a grade in question -- they move back to the probation category. Therefore, there is always a week of grace after a student has worked to get their name off of the list.
Please feel free to contact Heartland Athletic Director Laura Brown with questions as I know it can be confusing.
