Earlier this week I shared the Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up via the Elm Road Conference Launchpad. If you have not yet viewed the online sign up, please take time to sign up for a conference before the end of the day today.

PHM is hosting a Community Connection Fair this Saturday at Schmucker from 10am - 1pm. The Community Connection Fair is a great way for families to learn about organizations in our community that can provide supports for families. This evening the Elm Road PTO will be hosting a Fall Festival at Elm Road. The Fall Festival is from 6:30-8:30. Due to the activities PTO will be hosing in the parking lot and on Elm Road grounds, there will not be parking at Elm Road School. Families will need to park at South Bend Orthopedic (SBO) and buses will bring you to and from Elm Road.

We look forward to having families join us for these up coming events. We are thankful for the great partnerships we have with families as we help our studnets learn and grow. We use the SOAR acronym to help students remember the expectations for learning at Elm Road. Safe, Organized, Accountable and Respectful. Students can earn SOAR tickets throughout the day for setting a great example and following our SOAR guidelines. Please ask your child how the SOARed at Elm Road today!

Parents, when putting in an absence for your child, please call the office to let them know the reason your child is absent.

Please do not send medication in with your student, a parent needs to bring it in and complete paperwork. It needs to be children's medication prescribed by a provider.

If your child is 11, please get them their 6th grade shots and turn in the vaccine records to the health office.

Please send extra clothes with your student in the event they may need them

Fall is here!

Christ Child referral forms are available. Christ Child is a wonderful organization that will help eligible families with new clothes and winter coats for children 12 and under. In order to see if your family qualifies, please give Mrs. Shell a call to set up an appointment. All information is confidential.

Thanksgiving is not far off. If you are in need of food for the holiday, please contact Mrs. Shell for opportunities of assistance.

Dear Families,

Happy Autumn! We’ve completed our fitness testing and set goals for grades 3-5. Grades K-2 have been working on developing teamwork skills and learning our Minds in Motion Maze as well as some tag games and demonstrating social respect.

During the month of October, your child will practice the following fire safety procedures during physical education: calling 9-1-1, stop-drop-and roll, staying low and crawling, opening and closing doors and windows, and learning that firefighters are our friends (not to be scared or hide from them). We also appreciate our parent volunteers for being our 9-1-1 operators so students could practice making a 9-1-1 call and recite their address! Firefighter Hintz was a great guest speaker for our students! Please continue to work with your child(ren) on knowing his/her address and having a fire safety plan.

In addition to fire safety, all grades closed the month of October with enhancing our overhead throw and developing teamwork strategies with games like “Cross the River”, “Hula Hut Relays” “Hula Hut Throwdown”, “Monster Ball”, and “Snowball Fight”. We will play “Wizard Tag” and “Pumpkin Tag” to warm up and exercise our hearts! A focus will also be placed on healthy food choices and heart rate through our game of “Haunted House”. All grades will be learning about the importance of the skeletal system and how to keep our growing bones strong and healthy.

In the month of November, all grades will be celebrating Veterans' Day and Thanksgiving with games in the gym as well as a visit from our martial artist.

A focus during gym has also been placed on basic locomotor skills. Please help your child practice tying, hopping, jumping, skipping, throwing and catching when there is opportunity. Many kindergarten through second graders are needing lots of help with tying!

Our 4/5 grade girls finished their after school basketball program with the fifth graders vs. Staff! These girls worked hard and demonstrated tremendous growth with their ball skills! Be on the lookout for permission slips for grades 3-5 to try out for our jump rope team!

Thank you to Mrs. Tropp, Mrs. Ulrich and Mrs. Armenteros for monitoring our 4/5 mileage club runners at recess on Wednesday and Thursday!

All the students have been checking out books from the school library. Please be sure they keep them in a safe place and return them within two weeks. Our students enjoy having the fiction books easier to find as they are arranged by genre instead of author.

We will be reading about Fire Safety during the beginning of October in all classes.

During the Fall Festival on October 7 families can books from the Scholastic Book Fair. It will be held outside near the front doors during the event and you may also order books online to benefit our school.

Enjoy the cool days of fall and find a warm corner to read a book together as a family.

• When arriving at the school, please approach from the SOUTH off of Capital. Following this direction allows our traffic to keep flowing and does not interfere with our buses that are waiting to enter our parking lot to drop off the students. Do not go around the buses. At any time they may need to move into the parking lot! Use your turn signal, when entering the parking lot, so cars exiting know that it is safe to go. Exit RIGHT turn only.
• Parents picking up or dropping off children are reminded to have students exit their cars curbside ONLY for the students' safety. Parents, please stay in your car.
• Pull up as far as safely possible to the next car before having students exit or enter your vehicle. Always follow the directions of the safety patrol assistants.
• We are having cars pull around the corner, into the bus pick up/drop off area after buses have loaded/unloaded as means to keep cars moving through. If someone waves you around the corner, please follow the corner and pull up to the next person.
• Please help your child memorize their car rider number. This helps dismissal go a little quicker!
• Please add other family members to the emergency pick up list for your child. They need to have the tag we sent home or a picture of it on their phone to pick up your child.
• Students have received a tag with their car rider number on it, once they notified us they will be picked up at the end of school. Please hang this from your rearview mirror to help us identify your car.
• If your child is going to be a car rider who is picked up at the end of the day, please email pfadden@phm.k12.in.us to get a car tag if you have not already received one.

We are off to a great start to the school year. It’s hard to believe that we are entering the month of October. Our goal is to share monthly math tips with you that you can practice at home with your child. This month our tip is, fact fluency/number recognition.

K - counting to 60 and identifying numbers and 2D shapes outside of the classroom.

1-2 Addition facts- “part-part-whole” recognize that it takes two parts to make a whole number. (Ex: How many different ways can you make 10?)

3 - 5 Multiplication Practice - practicing their multiplication facts is very important in the intermediate grades. Below are a few websites you can use to practice. You can also do flash cards, practice while driving in the car, etc.

While learning about the five senses this month, Penn PALS students explored color mixing. They used red, blue, and yellow watercolors and eye droppers to mix two or more colors together to create various shades of green, orange, and purple. Students learned how to squeeze the bulb of the eye dropper to draw up the water and transfer it to the paint palette tray.

I hope everyone is settling into the school year well. I am so excited to be meeting with kids again. The students and I spent a week getting to know each other and making goals for what they hope to accomplish this year. Now, the students are working on culture projects that will be displayed at the Community Connections Fair on October 8, 2022 from 10:00-1:00. This free event is held at Schmucker Middle School and will be a great opportunity for everyone to learn about organizations in our community that can help you and your family. I hope to see many of you there.

Welcome back to music! In September we reviewed several foundations of music including instrument families, genres, and elements of music. We start the year off with lots of rhythm games and singing, as well as establishing good habits with handling instruments.
