Omaha North High Magnet
January 2022
Omaha North High Magnet Mission Statement
The mission of Omaha North High Magnet School is to prepare all students for success in lifelong studies and careers.
Message from Dr. Nero, Principal
Greetings Viking Families,
The Spring 2022 semester is in full swing. Students are focused on classes, activities, and athletics. We were pleased to welcome future Vikings to our Open House on Sunday, January 9th. If you know of families who did not get a chance to attend but are interested in North High, encourage them to contact Mr. John Hankel at 531-299-7185 or email: john.hankel@ops.org. We will gladly schedule a tour led by one of our Student Ambassadors.
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, February 17th 12-7pm. All conferences must be scheduled in advance. Parent/guardians will have the option to meet in-person, virtually via Microsoft Teams, or by phone. Please select the option that is best for your family. Appointments will be scheduled for 15 minutes each. We look forward to visiting with you about your student(s) progress. We recognize that students are our greatest resource, so during Viking Time they will learn how to schedule appointments using the Bookings App so they can assist with scheduling as well. The link to schedule your conference, including instructions, is coming soon!
We solicit your support in continuing to encourage students to follow all health & safety guidelines (mask wearing, frequent handwashing/sanitizing and consider vaccination if eligible). While cases are going down, we want to remain vigilant in our efforts to limit the spread of Covid 19. Remember that as we go about our daily lives, we are exposed to COVID at the local grocery store, restaurants, or other businesses; however, they are not required to send a notification letter. Notification of positive results does not necessarily mean that transmission occurred at school.
We remain focused on School Safety encouraging students to Be a Viking: Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be Accountable. Please ensure students arrive to school on time at 7:40am. We want students to be engaged in learning by being a positive presence in the classroom.
School counselors are working closely with teachers and students on registering for classes for next year. Talk with your students and reach out to counselors if you have any questions.
Thank you all for your continued support and involvement in the Viking Community. If you have any questions, please call us 531-299-2700.
Go Vikings!

ACE Luminarium Exhibit Design Competition
The first semester ACE Mentor Omaha design challenge required students to create an exhibit to be placed inside or just outside the currently under construction Kiewit Luminarium. The exhibit needed to fit into a 10'x10'x10' space and could have a theme of the students' choosing. The juniors and seniors in Engineering worked in small groups and with industry mentors throughout the semester to brainstorm, design, and create a budget. Of the nine Metro Omaha high schools, North placed two teams in the final four.
Lauren Sitzman and Stephanie Lewis designed an exhibit focused on water ecosystems, while Lilly Brown, Taylor Bogard, and Mathieu Marcoux designed an exhibit focused on Alternative Energy. These groups will now tweak their designs and look to create scaled-down functional prototypes during Second Semester. The groups will then present to a panel of judges in hopes of being the design challenge winner which also provides the chance to have their design implemented at the Luminarium.

Robotics Competition
On Saturday, January 21, 2022, the Omaha North Robotics teams competed at the Gross Catholic High School Robotics Tournament where our teams made an exceptional showing. The first part of the day is a flurry of matches where teams compete for a ranking.
1064M, Mathieu Marcoux, Zane Reick and Johnathan Riggins, debuted their new impressive looking robot, but quickly determined that it was not yet competition ready, but they are not deterred and took note of what needs to be adjusted.
Teams 1064R (ROTC) and 1064G and their alliance partners competed in the Eliminations matches but did not make it to the Quarter Finals.
1064A and 1064C, were alliance partners in the Elimination matches and after a hard-fought contest in the Quarter Finals, they lost by 1 point on a technicality (a cord from the robot was touching one of their scoring rings). Congratulations Johnathan Flores-Mondragon, Anna Hadden, Christian Gallagher, Bryton Bower, Chase Langan, Alex James, and Yahweh (Yaw - way) Pena.
1064A was awarded the Excellence award and the Gross High School Robotics Tournament. The Excellence Award is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics competition. This award is presented to a team that exemplifies overall excellence in building a high-quality robotics program. This team is a strong contender in numerous award categories.
The North Robotic teams exemplified what it means to be a Viking this weekend, they were professional, polite, helpful, and friendly.

Attention 11th Graders! The ACT Test is Tuesday, April 5th
April 5 is ACT day - No school for students in grades 9, 10, and 12
This school year, similar to last, all juniors (grade 11) will take the ACT. All juniors are required to take this state assessment. The test takes a little over four hours and requires an environment with no distractions. As a result, 11th graders will be the only students in attendance on that date, including students who take the NSCAS-Alternate Assessment.
The ACT test administration date is Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Attendance is critical on this day. Students who have taken the ACT in the past are still required to participate in this state administration. In order to facilitate the required testing environment, students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will not have school. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Building principals will provide information regarding post-test activities and release information. Busses will arrive at the 3:05 dismissal.
MyACT has free resources that can help students prepare for the ACT. Students can create an account at my.act.org Students may have set-up an account at school already.
Thank you for your continued efforts to assist students in preparing for the ACT on Tuesday, April 5.
Please contact Michelle Porter at michelle.porter@ops.org if you have questions.
