8th Grade Scientific Notation
Outline for Understanding and Using Scientific Notation
Success in a Flipped Classroom
It is crucial that you watch the assigned videos and take thorough notes, in order for this to work effectively and efficiently.
#1 Watch: Introduction to the power of 10.
This video is older you can tell, but still very interesting and a great introduction to scientific notation. The video demonstrates how quickly distances increase or decrease by simply multiplying by 10.
#2 Read Me Please
Scientific Notation is a special way of writing numbers that makes it easy to use big and small values:
The number is written in two parts:
- Just the digits (with the decimal point placed after the first digit), followed by
- × 10 to a power that puts the decimal point where it should be
(i.e. it shows how many places to move the decimal point).
#3 Discovery of the Rules of Writing Very Large and Very Small Numbers in Scientific Notation
Follow directions to complete writing numbers in scientific notation
- Complete the tables 1st
- Answer question a & b
- Complete 2 & 3 on back without a calculator
Turn in for credit when completed
#4 Homework: Watch the video and take thorough notes including all examples.
#5 LET'S PRACTICE

#13 Show what you know - Quiz Review
Before you take your final assessment:
Make sure you understand the following concepts
Can you use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other.
Can you perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division?
Are you Ready for your assessment?
You will take a SCHOOLNET designed TEST. Study hard before beginning this task!
