Spring Benchmark Testing
Our next round of AIMS web testing will be May 1- May 18. We would appreciate any and all assistance for this last round of testing in the library! The SWAT team approach during library times is still our goal! :) Classroom teachers are expected to help test their students' fluency.
Our Fountas & Pinnell reading benchmarking testing will need to be completed by May 18. Please share kits so that everyone can finish benchmarking on time.
Please update all of your google docs so that we have finalized information for next year. We will be starting interventions much earlier next year since we will have the data available. We will use this year's current RtI groups and services to begin our year next year.

Cultural Fair- April 25th
Big Hollow is hosting its first annual Cultural Fair! Please share the invitation Jackie Werderitch created with your families.
We will celebrate cultures from around the world. In order for this event to be successful we need YOU to participate!! We have 30 languages spoken in the Big Hollow community and would LOVE for each to be represented at the fair. We would like to invite any interested parent or family member to participate with their Big Hollow student(s). The event will take place after school, 5:00pm-6:30pm, and will provide our students an opportunity to experience the different cultures and countries represented by our Big Hollow community.
The fair will consist of tables or “booths” that represent cultures and/or countries from around the world. Click here to access the flyer that was sent home to parents!

Screen Free Week
The purpose of screen free week is to unplug from all digital entertainment (work and school assignments are not included) in order to rediscover the joys of life beyond the screen.
Participation for students and teachers is certainly voluntary, but regardless of whether you/students participate or not, this week is a fantastic opportunity to talk about the role technology plays in our lives and how it affects our mental, physical, social, and cognitive health.
If you’d like to find out more, you can check out www.screenfree.org. I will also provide more information and some hand-outs for students to take home closer to Screen Free Week. For now, here is an introduction video/news clip to show your students to let them know that SFW is coming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuxZw7O2eL8
In the next few weeks, could you help me recruit students who want to make posters to raise awareness about Screen Free Week? Students could use genius hour to create posters that will be hung around the school to let others know about the event. Posters could include:
-facts about screen use and its effects
-advertisements for screen-alternative activities (a local park, library events, etc.)
-lists of several activities students could participate in instead of screen-time. **See the attached poster as an example from the SFW website.
Any other ideas students have would also be great! Please submit posters to Beth by April 19th, and I will hang them April 20th.
Big Hollow Elementary's 1st Annual Book Swap
Here are the details:
What: 1st Annual Book Swap
When: The week of May 21-May 25 during your library time
***(Please send in gently used books the week of May 14th-18th)
Why: So every child at BH can read books over the summer!!!!!!!!
This is what will be shared with parents:
Please send your child to school with some, or all, of your gently used books (no limit) that could use a new home. Your child will earn a special Starbuck for each book (up to 10). You may send books in bags or boxes and your child may bring them to his/her classroom teacher. On the days of the Book Swap, your child will get to “purchase” new, gently used books with his/her special Starbucks!!
Our hope is that we will have an overflow of awesome books from all of the amazing Big Hollow families, so that every student will go home for the summer with new, gently used books (even if a student could not donate books)!!!
