Note from Nurse Becky
Thank you for the warm Hanawalt welcome! I've enjoyed getting to meet and talk with you and looking forward to a great school year!
Here are 7 things that we can do to help make this school year amazing!
1)Extra Change of Clothes: Please always keep a change of clothes in your students' locker/backpack because you never know when they may need it and it's a nicer experience for your student when they have their own clothes to change into.
2)Health Office Clothes: If your student borrows clothes from the Health Office, please wash and return them. We are in need of new or gently used and freshly washed:
- Girls leggings (for kindergarten - 5th grade)
- Girls athletic shorts (for kindergarten - 5th grade)
- Boys sweatpants/joggers (for kindergarten - 5th grade)
- Boys athletic shorts (for kindergarten - 5th grade)
3)Food Allergens: There are many students with severe food allergies at Hanawalt. Please check with your student's teacher before sending any food to the classroom.
4)Medical Conditions: If your student has a medical condition/concern and you have not informed me yet, please call, email or send me a Snap message to let me know.
5)Medical Paperwork: Many letters have been sent home in white envelopes and phone calls have been made requesting medical paperwork. If you have received a call, email, letter or Snap from me requesting medical documents, please have them completed and returned as soon as possible.
6)Absent from school: If your student has symptoms of illness, they need to stay home until 24 hours symptom free. If your student will not be at school for any reason, please call the school before 8am to let us know they will not be in attendance. Our number is 515-242-8411.
7)How to help communication with the school nurse and other DMPS staff:
Snap! Connect is such a great tool to have and all DMPS school's/parents can use it. It's a quick way to reach parents/guardians and staff. It can even translate to different languages. I use it all of the time to communicate with parents about things that happen in the Health Office. You can send me a Snap by typing in Becky Lause and my name will pop up.
If you are not using Snap, please take a few minutes to register and login to your Snap account.
Here are some helpful resources for you to get started:
How do I register for my Snap! Connect account?
The registration codes are for one-time use. If you have already used your one-time code and activated your account, you will not need an additional code.
If you have further questions about Snap, you can contact Snap directly with this email:
Thanks for your help in making this school year as safe and healthy as possible. I appreciate your support.
In Health,
Nurse Becky
Girls on the Run
4th Annual OneRun
The 4th annual District-wide OneRun fundraiser will be held at Water Works Park on September 23rd, 2023, with check-in between 8:00-8:45 a.m. The event will be a 2-mile fun run/walk with an option to cheer on the sidelines as a supporter! Registration is free for everyone; participation is what will count.
Event fees will be paid by corporate and individual sponsors. Once participation totals are tallied, the money raised will be sent directly to the schools. Each participant may designate one school. The more participants and donations, the more money to Hanawalt!

Hanawalt Community Notes
Welcome to the Hanawalt Community
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year Hanawalt Community! We would love to invite anyone interested to get involved this year with the various events and programs that will be taking place. You do not have to have previous experience or expertise; everyone was a first-time volunteer at one point! If you have special skills to offer, an interest in a certain area, or are willing to do whatever is needed to help our Hanawalt students; let us know, we would love your help! There are so many different ways to get involved, from helping plan events and programs that happen throughout the year, helping with after school clubs, volunteering to help with the drop off “Car Rider” lane in the mornings, teacher appreciation, being part of the Hanawalt Community Executive Committee, and so much more!
A new school year can be a lot to take in all at once. We have created a “Ways to Get Involved” form that is attached to help with a short description of all the ways you can help make our students’ time at Hanawalt as welcoming and successful as possible. All of these events and programs depend on community support, it wouldn’t be possible without you!
We also encourage everyone to attend the Hanawalt Community meetings. This is a great way to learn more and provide feedback about committees, events, budgets, and future planning as well as connect with other families and community members!
If you would like to get involved with the Hanawalt Community overall planning process, we would love for you to join the Executive Committee. This group meets monthly to plan events for the year, work with school leadership and committee leads, plans the year budget, Hanawalt Community communications, the Spirit Store, and so much more! We are currently looking for a treasurer, 2 co-vice-presidents, and additional at-large members. More information on each role can be found in the “Ways to Get Involved” document, and current Executive members would always be happy to connect directly to answer any questions!
