Maize South High School
February 2023
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Greetings Maverick Parents and Guardians,
I want to highlight and invite you to an exciting event coming up in February. For the first time in several years, Maize South and Maize High are performing a joint production in our theater departments and will perform the musical, Legally Blonde in a few short weeks. Tickets for the musical go on sale through Go Fan on February 1st. The opening night for Legally Blonde is Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 pm. Additional performances will be February 17th and 18th at 7:00 pm as well as a matinee on February 18th at 2:00 pm.
A few months ago I shared a parking lot study had been conducted with the intention of finding ways to make our parking lot safer and more efficient. Together with district leaders we are getting much closer to sharing adjustments in the traffic flow for student drop off/pick up, student drivers, and bus drop off/pick up. Please keep your eye out for communication in the coming week with these changes.
Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year will begin next week with class meetings. All students will meet with our counseling department to prepare for pre-enrollment on February 6th. Pre-enrollment is due on February 10th. Please have conversations in the next two weeks with your child about next year’s courses. Counselors will be available during conferences on February 9th to answer any parent or students questions about courses.
Some of our current sophomores may have an opportunity to participate in Shocker Academy, a new half day program that will span their last two years of high school. All sophomore families will receive district communication about this opportunity. There will be two information sessions during conferences on February 9th, at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm in the MSHS Lecture Hall.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, February 9th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Teachers will be in their classrooms for in person conferences. Students, parents, and guardians are invited to meet with teachers to discuss student progress. If you prefer to have a virtual conference, we will offer Zoom conferences as well. Please contact your student’s teacher by email if you would like to schedule a virtual or phone conference. Due to conferences, students will not have school on Thursday, February 9th or Friday, February 10th.
Feeding teachers during the 12 hour conference day can be expensive, and I am grateful to the parents who have offered to assist by providing snacks, sides, and desserts. If you would be willing to donate an item for our staff, please use this link to sign up, https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080a4ca5ad2ea2fe3-mshs1#/.
Thank you for supporting our Maverick teachers!

Vision and Hearing Screenings
Vision and hearing screenings are performed by the School Nurse’s office in accordance with Kansas statutes and district policy. District guidelines for these screenings include 10th grade students at the high school level and all students new to Maize this year. We have also been catching up with other grade level students who may have missed screenings in the past two years when the COVID protocols altered attendance.
Parents are notified by the school nurse and an evaluation is recommended for the students with
screening results outside the normal limits. These referrals have been emailed to parents.

Premier Blood Partners Program
Giving Back: MSHS volunteers achieve Premier Blood Partner status from the Red Cross
Maize South’s student volunteers in the the Community Action Club of Wichita (MSHS CACOW) have been named by the American Red Cross as one of its Premier Blood Partners for 2023, a high honor, for the student group’s support of the community blood supply.
Last year, CACOW teamed with KAY Club and the National Honor Society to help the Red Cross collect over 100 units of blood at Maize South’s annual spring and fall blood drives. These donations help save the lives of patients facing illnesses and injuries in Kansas.
“We’re proud to be a part of the Red Cross mission to help ensure lifesaving blood is available for hospital patients in need,” says Mark Bradshaw, the club’s faculty sponsor. “Our students celebrate the humanitarian value of benefiting our neighbors, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to host blood drives that help meet our community’s needs.”
Maize South High School will host its next Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday, March 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Community members are invited to come out and roll up a sleeve. Their donations support the Red Cross’s efforts to save lives and Maize South’s mission to prepare young people to contribute positively to their community.
To schedule an appointment to donate blood on March 1, visit https://t.co/dgIo6ND04M or email mbradshaw@usd266.com.

From the Attendance Office
If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time.
School Year Reminders
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
