A Helping Hand from the HMS Community
During this holiday season, we want to make sure we do what we can to help support those members of our HMS community that are in need.
If you are able to help out, here are some possible ways to do so . . .
- Donations of gift cards to local supermarkets and department stores to be dropped off at the middle school main office.
- Monetary donations which will be used to help purchase items/gift cards for families in need. Cash or checks can be sent to the main office. Checks should be made payable to "Town of Hingham", and "Holiday Donation" should be written in the memo line (Please reach out directly to Erin Bray at erinobray@gmail.com for other monetary donation options.)
Donations will be accepted now through Monday, December 16.
Thank you!
Congratulations to the November Team Members of the Month!
Our Team Members of the Month for November were invited to enjoy a breakfast of hot and delicious pancakes, expertly prepared by Mr. Smith.
Thanks to these students for consistently working hard, being kind, and going above and beyond at HMS!
The Weather Outside is Frightful . . .
Winter has arrived and the temperatures are dropping!
Please remember that all students are expected to wait outside before school until the 7:20 bell, unless the temperature become dangerously cold or the weather is inclement.
Please be sure your middle schooler is dressed appropriately for these conditions (winter coats, hats, gloves, etc.)
Feel free to blame the principal if it makes this wardrobe battle a little easier in your household!
December Spirit Days 12/16 - 12/20
Seventh Grade Scientists
The Seventh Grade Pirate Team put starch and glucose molecules into Dialysis Tubing to conduct an experiment that represents what happens to these molecules inside our small intestines. Did glucose or starch travel outside of the tubing? Ask your 7th grader for the results!
Meanwhile, the Seventh Grade Barracuda’s science classes kicked off a mini “Chemistry of Life” unit by creating “Element Word” posters to learn about various elements found on the Periodic Table. Students were very creative with their word choices and illustrations!
And the Great White Sharks are learning about metabolic reactions!
Unified Sports at HMS
Hingham Middle School is very excited to be offering Unified Intramurals afterschool on Tuesdays throughout the months of January and February!
Unified Intramurals will be an opportunity for our neurodivergent students and students with intellectual disabilities to engage in after school games and sports related activities with the assistance of their neurotypical peers.
Unified sports is composed of athletes and peers. Athletes are our neurodivergent students and students with intellectual disabilities. A peer is a neurotypical student who would assist our athletes with scoring goals, leading warm ups, and being an all around support and friend on the playing field. Unified sports is sponsored by the Special Olympics.
If your middle schooler is interested in participating in Unified Intramurals, as either an athlete or peer, please fill out this google form
Intro to Yoga Wraps Up Until the New Year
Intro to Yoga celebrated its last session this week with 8 students in attendance! We celebrated by creating "letters of the alphabet" from yoga poses.(Thanks to our Health teacher, Mrs. Little, for her suggestion.)
Thank you to all of the students who participated this fall. We practiced breathing, balancing, moving, and staying still!
Stay tuned for more classes in the New Year.
Private School Applications
If you are planning to apply to private schools for next school year, please review the attached paperwork describing the process and necessary paperwork.
Counselors and teachers are happy to accommodate these requests, and we ask that you give at least 3 weeks notice before any deadlines.
A few things for students (and families) to remember when seeking a recommendation . . .
Adequate notice is very important! Keep in mind that you are most likely not the only student asking this teacher for a letter of recommendation Ask your teachers and counselors what they need from you. In order to write your letter of recommendation, your they may need to know more about you as a person. Please provide them with important information that they may not have. For example, a list of your interests, volunteer work, and other things they may not be able to see in their classroom. Provide a list of all of your schools and their deadlines. Make direct contact with the person you are asking for a recommendation. We often receive automated email requests from schools with little or no communication from students and families. Asking the person if they are able to write you a recommendation before they receive an email request from the school is strongly encouraged.
Before submitting any electronic requests, please review and fill out the attached forms.
Thank you!

Staff Appreciation: Faculty Wish Lists
Dear HMS Community,
As the holiday season approaches, it's the perfect time to show our heartfelt appreciation for the incredible teachers and staff who make such a positive impact on our children’s lives.
To make this season extra special, we’re organizing a collective effort for gift-giving. Participation is entirely optional but greatly appreciated. Whether through a $10 donation or a thoughtful note, every contribution makes a difference and helps brighten the holidays for our HMS staff.
Here’s how you can get involved:
Individual Contributions: Purchase classroom supplies directly from the Amazon Wish Lists created by our HMS staff.
Group Gift: Contribute to a group gift by sending monetary donations via Venmo (@HMSPTO-1103). Please include "Holiday donation for [team/group/teacher]" in the comment section.
Notes and Cards: Write cards with your child. These personal touches mean so much and are always deeply cherished.
Let’s come together as a community to make this holiday season truly special for our HMS staff.
Your support is invaluable, and our collective effort will surely leave a lasting impression.
Happy Holidays,
HMS PTO
P.S. If you have any questions, please reach out to Leigh Roy, HMS Staff Appreciation Chair, at leighkroy@gmail.com.
