Principal's Update
It is hard to believe that we are a few weeks away from the end of the first semester! Students and staff have been working hard this year and will have an opportunity to celebrate their progress throughout the month of December.
We hope you will plan to visit Nance during school hours on Wednesday, December 11th to see our students' STEM Fair projects. Please enter the building through the main office. When you come to the office, your student will be able to accompany you to see the projects.
Don't forget that the last day of school for students is Friday, December 20th and winter break begins on Monday, December 23rd! Students return for second semester on Monday, January 6th.
Happy holidays and a blessed new year to you and your family!

Mr. Cooper's Corner
Have you ever felt like you needed a vacation but it was not the right time? For whatever the reason you couldn’t get away, a vacation was still needed. As Winter Break is approaching for our students, December 23rd, 2024 to January 5, 2025, now is a good time to explore some "staycation" ideas to help engage your child. Below is a list of 5 "Family Staycation" ideas for you to consider during the Winter Break.
1. Have a Movie Marathon
While you probably don't want your kids glued to the TV for the whole school break, a planned afternoon or evening of movie-watching can be fun. Choose a theme or a genre for your movie marathon, or just have everyone pick their favorite movie. Make some popcorn, grab a few other favorite movie treats and some cozy pillows and blankets, relax and enjoy!
2. Visit a Museum
A trip to a museum is both educational and fun. Depending on the interests of your family, you could visit an art museum, museum of natural history, science center or any number of museums in your area.
3. Go Bowling
5-pin bowling is a fun family activity. For young children or beginner bowlers, many bowling alleys offer bumper bowling, where the gutters are covered so that the ball stays in the lane. This allows the kids to focus on having fun instead of getting frustrated by having their bowling ball continuously roll into the gutter.
4. Go to the Library
If the weather outside is frightful, but you still want to get out of the house, the library can be a great destination. Kids can read books, look for movies to borrow or use the computers at the library, and you can find some new reading material as well.
5. Make a Family Scrapbook
If you have a digital camera or a smartphone, chances are you have hundreds, if not thousands, of photos on your computer that you have never printed off. It's a nice idea to get some of them printed and spend some time organizing them into photo albums or scrapbooks.

Knights Book Club- November & December
For the months of November and December we are proud to offer two selections as part of the Nance Knights Book Club program!
All students in grades Pre-K through 2nd are receiving a copy of My Brother Charlie. Written by Holly Robinson Peete and her daughter, Ryan Elizabeth Peete, and beautifully illustrated by Shane W. Evans, this touching story is told from the perspective of Callie, a young girl whose twin brother, Charlie, has autism. Callie shares her love and admiration for Charlie while also explaining the challenges he faces. Through Callie’s voice, we see how Charlie’s autism affects his family and friends, and how they all come together to support and love him. My Brother Charlie is a heartwarming tale that teaches children about acceptance, empathy, and the beauty of diversity.
Students in 3rd-6th grade will receive a copy of The Astounding Broccoli Boy. Written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, this humorous and action-packed story follows Rory, a seemingly average boy who suddenly turns bright green after an incident at school. He soon finds himself befriending another green boy, and together they explore what it means to be different while trying to solve the mystery behind their strange transformation. As they journey through thrilling adventures, Rory discovers that being "green" may be more powerful than he ever imagined. The Astounding Broccoli Boy is a quirky and delightful novel that encourages kids to embrace their individuality and see the extraordinary in themselves.
Here are some activities you can complete with your child when you read this month’s Nance Knights Book Club books:
Discuss Emotions – Ask your child how the characters feel in different parts of the story. How would they feel in similar situations?
Role-Playing – Act out scenes from the books, such as Callie explaining Charlie’s behavior or Rory’s discovery of his powers. This helps bring the stories to life and builds understanding.
Research Together – Look up more information about autism or superhero abilities in nature and science. This can lead to exciting family projects.
Family Journals – Encourage your child to write or draw their thoughts about the stories. They can create their own journal like Rory or reflect on a sibling relationship like Callie.
Book-Themed Art – Create drawings or crafts inspired by the characters’ unique traits (e.g., a picture of Charlie’s favorite activity or a broccoli-themed superhero cape).
The 100 Book Challenge Continues!
Students who have completed 100 books will be recognized with a special pizza party luncheon and prizes this December!
