LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
This week, I'd like to highlight a wonderful collaboration between LISD and the Lopez Island Family Resource Center. We have a strong partnership with the LIFRC, and this one involves our high school woodshop class. Woodshop students have been busy this semester making Adirondack chairs for the LIFRC "Chair-ity Auction" fundraiser. Once the chairs are finished in April, local artists will turn them into unique and beautiful works of art, and they will be displayed outside about a dozen Lopez businesses and organizations between June 7 and July 10. Attached to each chair will be some information about our woodshop class and the students who made the chairs as well as a description of one of the LIFRC programs that make a positive impact on our community. Each gorgeous chair will be auctioned at the LIFRC annual summer social.
Below, you can see a few photos of students working on the chairs, and I'll add more photos to future newsletters to keep you updated on this project. Plus, you'll see the chairs displayed around the island:-)
Thanks to Kristen Maker, our woodshop teacher, and our woodshop students for their hard work and craftsmanship.
Have a great weekend!
All my best,
Martha

Music Highlight: Mariachi Lobo
This year marks the first year of Mariachi Lobo, Lopez High School’s mariachi. The group has a mix of backgrounds and levels of prior musical experience - for many mariachi students, this is their first year playing their instrument. Despite being the school’s newest ensemble, they are also the busiest. These students have been working hard all year, performing at their first community event in November and then again at Winter Arts Night in December. They have a busy month ahead, performing for a community event, the Spring Concert, and traveling to the mainland to perform at a high school music festival at Western Washington University. Stop by the Community Center this Saturday at 11 and 1 to hear them perform at the LIFRC’s Winter Health Fair, or on Wednesday at 6 for our Spring Concert.

Discovering Garden Friends
As the first and second graders were preparing their garden beds by stringing and marking the areas, they stumbled upon this beauty! Earthworms are an important part of garden health, and it’s heartening to see this one embraced by this brilliant group.

What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I have done soccer, basketball, and track all four years of high school. All of that keeps me pretty busy, and I think basketball is my favorite.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
Playing on the new girls varsity soccer team this fall. We all got to build the team together, which was really cool. None of us had played on an all girls team before so it was a really fun experience that we got to do together.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
My friends and my family. I have a very tight knit family and they are very important to me. They have shaped who I am. My friends are always there for me and I appreciate having people to laugh and have fun with.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
Try to enjoy it and have fun. Don’t stress about all the little stuff. Say “yes!” to opportunities that present themselves to you. Spend time with people you love.
What is one song that summarizes your graduation from high school?
Learning to Fly, by Tom Petty and covered by the Weepies. I grew up listening to this song and have come back to it because it really resonates with me.
Who/what do you find inspiring?
My siblings. They both really chase what inspires them in life. They’re not afraid to travel, explore and create opportunities for themselves.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
This isn’t really an assignment, but I’ve been an assistant in Jaimie’s elementary art enrichment classes for the last two years. I’ve learned a lot from working with the kids and I’ve learned how much I enjoy helping others, especially kids.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
I’d say trust. It’s the foundation of creating strong friendships and other relationships in your life, and it makes being around your friends that much more enjoyable.
In 10 years, I will be…
I will be enjoying life, hopefully traveling, and starting a business. I want to be working in marketing and also go to cosmetology school.
What are your plans after high school?
I plan to go to college next year. I think I’m going to attend Cornell College in Iowa and play soccer there. I’ll study business marketing.
