Eye Glasses
What are eyeglasses?
Eyeglasses are used when you don't have good vision. The first few versions had leather or wood frames. These frames would then have blown glass lenses. The thickness of the lenses depended on how bad your vision was. The thickness of the glasses was determined by a vision test. The first versions did not have "arms". You could hold them up to your eyes.
Who invented them?
Salvino D'Armate designed the eyeglasses. Although he was behind the design, he was not the one to spread them onto the public.
Who is given credit for the invention?
Allesandro della Spina worked with Salvina D'Armate. But, Allesandro was the one who brought it to the people. He was the one that helped introduce them to people, therefore people mistake him as the inventor.
What year did it originate?
Invented around 1285
How have eyeglasses changed?
Over the years the basic design stayed the same. Eventually, "arms" were added. These arms were connected to the lenses and rested on your ears. The purpose has stayed the same throughout the years. The only thing that has changed was the design.
