A Busy First Month!
Building Classroom Communities
CES staff members discussed our Hopes and Dreams/Goals for our students this year, and classroom teachers have led their learners through discussions and activities in order to allow each student to name a Hope and Goal that they have for themselves. Classes also developed Classroom Rules and Procedures so that everyone can learn in a safe, kind environment where we help one another to do our best! Delegates from each classroom held a Constitutional
Convention with Mrs. Chubb and collaborated to create a CES Constitution (more details to come).
Initial Assessments
All learners have participated in beginning-of-the-year assessments, such as STAR Reading and STAR Math. These assessments help teachers to determine student needs and to plan instruction accordingly.
Open House, Pizza Supper & Book Fair
We had a fantastic turnout at our Open House! It was wonderful to see students excitedly sharing their learning with their families.
Thank you to the CES PTO for hosting the pizza supper. Many thanks to Hackleboro Orchards for donating the delicious apples, and to Canterbury Woods Country Club for donating the water.

Nurse Update - by Karen Decker-Gendron
I am pleased to share that we have had a healthy start to our school year! Please call the school by 8:30 a.m. if your student will be absent. In the event of an illness, injury or health-related concern, please reach out to me directly. This information allows me to monitor illness trends and provide the best care for your student.
If your student is seen by their primary care physician or pediatrician for an annual checkup, please forward along a copy of their physical and immunization record to be placed in their health record here at school.
Healthy foods help keep students’ minds and bodies ready for learning. We ask that you ensure that all food sent to school for birthdays and other celebrations is consistent with the intent of the district’s Wellness Policy, which promotes healthy eating among our students. A letter outlining options for healthy treats was sent home at the beginning of the school year. Please reach out to me at kdecker-gendron@sau80.org if you would like another copy of the guidelines.
Transportation
If a student has a transportation change on a particular day (such as being picked up by a different adult), you must send a note or email Ms. Manita at rmanita@sau80.org to notify us of the change. Teachers will not necessarily receive an email with a change in a timely manner due to their teaching schedule, so all changes must go through the office. We are asking that all changes be sent to the office by 1:30 PM on any given day. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Shh! We're Writing the Constitution
Students in third and fourth grades did an excellent job performing Shh! We're Writing the Constitution last month. The play describes how the Constitution came to be written and ratified. The students learned their lines and performed the various songs with only two weeks of practice. The K-2 learners joined the older students to end the performance by singing We the People. This was a moving performance and a wonderful way to kick off the 2024 school year!
K-2 Field Trip
PTO Update - by Rebecca Plue and Chelsea Szepan
The CES PTO meets the second Thursday of every month. Our next meeting is October 10, 2024 at 6PM at the CES Library. Please come and join us as we plan upcoming events and fundraisers!
The PTO would like to thank new and returning members for their attendance at the first PTO meeting of the year. We had a wonderful meeting filled with brainstorming ideas for the year and solidifying upcoming plans for fundraising. The PTO is always looking for more volunteers to organize and/or run various events for CES students- don’t hesitate to reach out if you are interested in getting involved. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please email Rebecca at rebeccaturturro@gmail.com.
Mark those calendars! We have a huge Fall Festival planned for Saturday, October 19 th from 3pm-5pm at CES. Admission is free; bring cash or Venmo to take part in various activities at the event, or to purchase food. Key events include a Chili Contest, Trunk-or-Treat, Costume Contest, Carnival Games, Principal-for-a-Day Raffle, Pie Eating Contest, and more! All proceeds raised will support ongoing requests from the school to continue providing our children wonderful opportunities for learning and play. Follow us on Facebook (CES Advocates) for ongoing event information, and use the link below to sign up for the Chili Contest. Winner takes home a prize package filled with desirable gift cards! Reach out to Rebecca (rebeccaturturro@gmail.com) to get involved with volunteering, or if you would like to deck out your trunk and share treats at the Trunk-or-Treat event. Hope to see you there!
Secret Garden
Did you know that CES has a beautiful garden outside the fourth grade classroom? Affectionately called "the Secret Garden" by students and staff, this relaxing space affords a place for folks to reflect, relax, and learn.
Our fabulous fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Hebert, has both a green thumb and an artistic side. She has worked hard to clear the garden of weeds as well as make beautiful bricks that represent beloved children's books. We look forward to the many hours that folks will enjoy using the refreshed space this school year!
