We hope you had a wonderful weekend and if you are celebrating, Happy Rosh Hashanah.

With this beautiful fall weather, please ensure you are dressing your students in layers. The mornings begin cool; however, by their lunch/recess time the sun is shiny and it is warm again.

Also, we hope you are able to join our PTA for the Fall Festival this Friday. It is a nice event for students to come out and have some fun.

If you would like your child's teacher or a staff member to complete a rating scale or assessment for a doctor, you must complete a Release of Records from for us to release information about your child. You can access the form here and upon completion, please return it to Mrs. Beth Sheilds.

This year is Fulton’s 25th anniversary! The yearbook committee is having a cover contest for the yearbook! This contest is for all students in grades K-5. The contest begins Monday October 3rd and ends Friday October 14th. The theme for the cover is celebrating the 25th anniversary, school spirit, and the 3R’s. The artwork needs to be on an 8.5x11 piece of paper with the design in portrait layout with student and teacher name on the back. All entries should be turned in to your teacher. There will be a finalist from each grade with the grand prize winner’s artwork on the cover. Get your creative juices flowing and create Fulton’s yearbook cover! Fulton Falcons soar to success!

HCPSS participates in the Free and Reduced-price Meals (FARMs) program. Qualification is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential.

Participation in FARMs qualifies students for a wide range of opportunities and resources beyond breakfast and lunch, including free college applications, free or reduced JumpStart tuition, discounted internet through the Comcast Internet Essentials program, and more.

Families must submit a new application every school year. During the first 30 school days, students with FARMs eligibility from the prior school year will be carried over. Any student who has not filled out an application up to the 30th school day will have their prior year status changed to full pay status until a new application is received.

Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to fill out the applications as soon as possible. It is very important that applications are filled out correctly.

Join KidzArt as we partner with the PTA for this special Friday Workshop! We will meet right after school on Friday, October 14th. Students will have time for a quick snack break and then will head over to the outdoor tent for some creative fun. This 75 minute, in-person workshop will feature a fun, fall-themed drawing. The HCPSS Black Student Achievement Program Saturday Math Academy Fall Session

is approaching!

This year, the BSAP Saturday Math Academy will offer an in-person enrichment program for Howard County Public School System students in all levels of math for grades 3-12 based on course availability. Registration will take place online Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 9:00 a.m.- until capacity is reached. Class space is limited. Families can register by accessing the HCPSS Connect Website.

We are so excited to be participating in the Square One Art Fundraiser! This will help us to raise funds for staff initiatives and you have the opportunity to purchase a keepsake with your child's creation. The Fulton online catalog will be available in October.

Students in grades 1-5 will be taking the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment on the dates on the chart below.

The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment is designed to measure a student's academic achievement and growth over time in reading and mathematics. Together with other classroom-based information, MAP results can help teachers make instructional decisions that match the needs of each child.

MAP is a computer adaptive assessment. In a computer adaptive assessment, as a student responds to questions, the test responds to the student, adjusting up or down the difficulty of the questions presented to the student. This creates a personalized assessment for every student.

You do not need to do anything to prepare for the test. Make up tests will be scheduled for those who are absent.

Last week we noticed that students are gathering outside of the blacktop gate as well as playing on our primary playground prior to arrival. Often times these students are unsupervised and last week this resulted in injury. Prior to 9:15 we ask that you supervise your children to ensure the safety of all. At 9:15, our staff will join their duty post and welcome our students to walk to class.

Did you know it is Hispanic Heritage Month? Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period (hispanicheritagemonth.gov).

• In the month of October, we will continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month as well as Disabilities and Inclusion!

We are excited to host a flu clinic for Fulton students and staff on Friday, October 14th. The clinic will begin after morning announcements and will continue until all students who have signed up receive the flu vaccine. If you would like your child to receive the flu vaccine, please take a moment to complete this form. The deadline for registration is October 7th. If you do you not want your child to receive the flu vaccine at Fulton elementary school, you do not need to take any further action.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) recently opened a pathway for local school systems to repurpose up to three inclement weather days as asynchronous school days for the 2022–2023 school year.
