Lions
Species name: Panthera leo (latin) Lion (vernacular)
Population: 25,000 to 40,000
Community: Pride population is 13 to 17 and territory is up to 100 square miles
Lions habitat and niche
Habitat: Grass lands and open woods
Niche: Large hoofed animals that could be zebras and gazelles. Lions will also eat small prey. Lions usually hunt in groups. Female Lions usually do the hunting early in the morning or late at night. The males are larger and have larger manes. Lions can sleep up to 20 hours a day.
Ecosystem
- Grasses are the producers
- Hoofed animals eat the grass
- Lions eat the hoofed animals
- Dung beetles are the decomposers that feed on the solid waste of other animals
Biome
- The biome is the southern Sahara desert to Southern Africa.
- They do not live in the rain forest region
- Active at night
- Can be found in Europe, Asia, and Africa

- Their roar is used to communicate
- It warns intruders of their boundaries
- Their claws help grab and hold their prey
- Their rough tongue helps peel the skin of their prey away
Why I chose the lion to win
The Lion is strong and fast. Crocodiles and humans are the only things that threaten lions. I believe my lion will win because it is at the top of the food chain. The lion usually outlasts the predators.
