School Newsletter Term 3, Week 2
Friday 2nd August 2024
Kia ora Koutou,
We are thrilled to share the fantastic progress and exciting activities happening this term. Our students have kicked off Term 3 with enthusiasm and dedication, setting a positive tone for the months ahead.
Te Wao Nui o Tane have taken part in a safe cycling unit, aiming to equip our students with essential cycling skills and safety knowledge. The program has been a tremendous success, with students eagerly participating and demonstrating improved confidence and competence on their bikes. This initiative not only promotes physical activity but also emphasizes the importance of road safety, benefiting our entire community.
Additionally, our visit to the Cosmodome was a highlight for many. The interactive experience allowed students to explore the wonders of space, sparking curiosity and inspiring a deeper interest in science and astronomy. The Cosmodome visit complemented our curriculum perfectly, providing a hands-on learning opportunity that was both educational and entertaining.
We are also proud to announce the positive start of our Manawatu cricket program. Students have shown remarkable enthusiasm and sportsmanship, honing their skills and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with team sports. This initiative fosters a sense of community and encourages a healthy, active lifestyle among our students.
Overall, the start of Term 3 has been incredibly promising. Our students' enthusiasm and commitment to their studies and extracurricular activities are truly commendable. We look forward to more exciting events and achievements as the term progresses.
Starting Monday we will be having a new structure built in the hall car park to allow covered access to our transportation vehicles for our Rm 9 students. The hall car park will be closed Monday - Wednesday at this stage. It will be sealed so there will be no entry or exit during these times. Please plan for this.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.
Nga mihi,

It was cool to see the stars - Joanna
It was fun and I got to see Matariki - TJ
We learn’t about Scorpio Orion and other Greek legends. We were also educated well about Māori tales - Marcus
There were a lot of stars - Taylen
We saw Te Rā - Maddy
After going to the Cosmodome, I went home and researched about constellations -Eroni

Tipuranga
Room 14
Ruma 14 have been having lots of fun at cricket. We have learnt a cool new game of tag with the pool noodles. We have tried to make a tall tower with the cricket wickets. We have been practising our throwing skills with buddies. Thank you Josh and his friends who came to teach us!
Room 17
In Room 17 we have been learning how to measure and compare. We measured our hands. We put them in order from smallest to biggest. We used unifix blocks to measure their length.
Puāwaitanga
Room 10
This week Puawaitanga have started their sessions with Manawatū Cricket. Rūma Tekau had their first lesson on Wednesday. We had lots of fun learning/practising how to throw, catch and strike a ball. We especially enjoyed creating our own targets with the wickets.
Room 7
Rūma Whitū have been watching the Olympics and have been working super hard using our Mana Aotūroa to create an Olympic poster. We have also begun to study a country that is participating in the Olympics. Presentations to come on that one. Ka Pai Rūma Whitū.
Te Wao Nui o Tāne
Room 3
For the past two weeks Room 3 have been learning about the Olympics. We have been reading about the Olympics during our whole class reading time. We have learned about the ancient and modern Olympics and looked at the similarities and differences between them. We have also done some Olympic art. We made some Starry Night Olympic Art. For our Starry Night art we had to trace a picture of the Eiffel Tower. We then drew some shapes to guide our starry night background. We then painted our starry night, then created more lines using pastel. Finally, we added the Eiffel Tower image again and coloured that using pastel. We are happy with our work.

Cycle Safety with Te Wao Nui o Tāne
This term, TWNOT students have been participating in some cycle safety lessons with Sport Manawatu. We had instructors come in and teach us some bike skills. The Year 5s got to learn some skills around school on the courts and the turf. The Year 6s got to go out on the road and learn how to cycle safely using turn signals and safe riding positions. The Year 6s then finished with a bike over the bridge and down to the eels. We loved this opportunity and can’t wait to test out our skills on the road!
Art with Mrs Bowles
TWNOT have been learning about the elements of visual art with Mrs Bowles. We focussed on the element of space about positive space - the space that a shape takes up in artwork and negative space - the space around the shape. We used mana aotūroa to design creative shapes for our mahi, and used a lot of whakamana to put our artwork together.
