What's Happening in English/Language Arts
6th Grade-Sixth graders have been reading a series of articles from the Critical Reading: Monsters book. These articles are about monsters which piques students' interest, but there is so much more at work here. Students are practicing the important reading skills of: finding the main idea, recalling facts, using words precisely, making inferences, understanding author's purpose, and other critical thinking skills. Sometimes these articles are read independently and other times, they are read aloud with a partner, practicing reading fluency skills as well. Students are tracking their own growth on each of these skills in a growth chart which can be found on Google Classroom.
7th Grade- It is finally here, The Outsiders! This week we will begin SE Hinton's classic novel. Do not expect to see students reading at home unless they have been absent or missed class for some reason. Most of the lessons related to characterization, plot, theme, writing an argument, and other standards will be practiced during class. This coming of age classic presents a great opportunity to connect with your child if you remember reading it during your middle school years!
8th Grade- 8th Grade Language Artists are reading Lord of the Flies, and examining the many interesting and important claims about society, people, groups...and middle school! They have been exploring literary concepts such as characterization, symbols, allusions, and vocabulary. Some students have created mini comic strips of their favorite scenes from the book.
