RED RIBBON WEEK
October 21st-25th
Red Ribbon Week is a national recognized week focused on drug and alcohol prevention in young adults/adolescents. We participate by talking about what we can do to keep ourselves healthy, as well as “dressing up.” Each day has a protective factor highlighted, along with a theme. Protective factors are a combination of external and internal competencies that are critical for healthy adolescent development. Following the protective factor highlight and theme days are discussion points to have with your families.
Monday – Caring Relationships – “Pair Up for Healthy Living” Twin Day – Dress like a friend or sibling or wear an Olson shirt
Why is important to care about yourself? What does caring about yourself looks like, feel like, think like, etc.? Why are caring relationships important? Who are the people that show you a caring relationship? What does not fit into a caring relationship?
Tuesday – High Expectations – “Be Future Ready by Making Healthy Choices!” Dress as your future career
What were the expectations your parents have for you? What do you expect of yourself and others? What do others expect of you? How do expectations and challenges connect?
Wednesday – Positive Activities – “Team Up to Be Happy & Healthy!” Wear favorite team jersey, spirit wear, or team colors
What activities are you involved in? How do these activities help you become a better person? How do these activities keep you out of trouble? What if you are not involved in any activities? What new positive activities could you participate in? What makes participating in positive activities so important?
Thursday – Safe Places – “Dream of a Healthy & Drug Free World!” Wear pajamas & slippers
Where are safe places in your environment? Who are safe people to talk to? What makes them safe? Just because a person looks safe, does that mean they are safe?
Friday – Meaningful Participation – “Roll out the Red Carpet to Shine in Your Life’s Movie!” Wear Red
What does it mean to participate meaningfully in something? Why is it important to participate with meaning? What is something that you can do today that would be meaningful for someone else?
