America & Me Essay Contest for Michigan 8th Grade Students Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Students interested in opening a savings account still have time to turn their applications in.
Please contact our office if you have any questions. Ashley Herriman, ELGA Credit Union Branch Manager, is available at 810-600-2518 for any student account questions.
Toys for Tots and Hat/Mitten Drive
Can you imagine being outside in the frigid winter weather with no hat, gloves or mittens to warm you? Can you imagine being a small child and not receiving one small gift during the holiday season? Our Leadership & Service classes are organizing two charity drives to help those less fortune this year by participating in a hat and mitten drive, as well as a Toys for Tots drive! Our school will accept donations of NEW hats, gloves and mittens as well as NEW toys in their original packaging. There will be boxes in the office where you can bring your donations until Friday, December 14th.

FALLing into Poetry
When you hear the word “autumn,” what comes to mind? Well, it could be a number of things, you might say. Some of your thoughts might include:
- the sight of beautiful fall leaves
- the sounds of combines harvesting crops
- the feel of wind and chilly air upon your skin
- the taste of spicy cider and glazed donuts
- the smell of hot chocolate to warm your body
Such discussions took place recently in Mrs. DeRossett’s and Mrs. DuCharme’s 7th-grade English classes. Autumn came to life in so many interesting ways! Following discussions, students wrote poems to express their true thoughts and feelings about autumn. Choosing just the right words took time, as they carefully crafted and personalized their poems. In addition to writing poems, students scoured woodlands and their own backyards to find the perfect fall leaf to press for their poems. Moreover, leaf identification took place in class, and students made connections to their science classes, where they recently studied photosynthesis.
So what kinds of messages did students send to the readers in their poems? Responses included: “I want my readers to know that I LOVE FALL!” Another said, “I want my readers to know about the many changes that take place in the autumn.” Lastly, a student replied, “I want my readers to be reminded of the fun and special holidays that we have this time of year.”
This autumn leaf project all came together one day when students wrote their poems on special, decorative autumn paper and glued their colorful leaves in place. Autumn became the perfect time for these poets and naturalists to come to life!
GMS PRIDE Team Gives Thanks
A big shout out goes to our PTO volunteers for running the concession stand at our first PRIDE Day! We'd also like to thank our generous GMS families for helping to make our PRIDE celebration a BIG success! Your donation of sandpaper, ribbon and crafting supplies allowed kids to show their creativity! A special word of thanks to the Ashley family for donating 120 blocks of wood!!! All of the kids had fun channeling their artistic side and making take-home crafts!
