LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
The Thanksgiving holiday is nearly upon us and I know we're all looking forward to a little break from school. Thanksgiving means different things to different people, and though it's healthy to feel and express gratitude or share a great meal with friends and family, the historical event we celebrate is rooted in colonization. So then, how DO we talk to kids about Thanksgiving? NPR offers some great suggestions in this article from 2015: How to Talk to Kids About Thanksgiving or this one from Cup of Joe from 2021 with the same title: How to Talk to Kids About Thanksgiving. Also, November is Native American Heritage Month, which provides a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and honor the history and contributions of indigenous people. Our wonderful librarian, Deirdre, has created a display of books to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and we encourage you to stop by and browse the collection when you're in the building. Books are great seeds for discussion.
Friday, November 29, is the lighting ceremony in Lopez Village. MPPACT will be performing some holiday tunes at this sweet event, and you'll be able to see some beautiful hanging luminaries made by many Lopez community members including some LISD students with the help of the amazingly creative Debbie Collins.
On Saturday, November 30, The pre-school will be hosting their annual holiday bazaar in the LISD gym. Lopez artists and artisans will be selling beautiful items, and it's a great way to shop locally for gifts. The Lopez Island Education Foundation will be running the bake sale at the bazaar to raise money for field trips and supplies/materials for special projects for students. If you're on island that weekend, I hope to see you there!
This will be the last newsletter in November. Enjoy the holiday break.
All my best,
Martha Martin

After School Options for Students - FREE
There are multiple options for after school activities for our K-8 students. The Lopez Island Family Resource Center has programming for K - 4th grade and separate programming for grades 5 - 8. Check them out! They have a great calendar of activities.
Additionally, on Tuesdays, the Lopez Island library is running a fantastic interactive program for grades 5 - 8th where they get to explore all events that occurred in our country during the time the USA was engaged in the Space Race and the Cold War. Library staff have put a lot of research and planning in developing this program. Last year they learned about WW2 and the program was a huge hit with the participants. Students take the bus to the library and parents pick them up from there. Contact Claudia Rempel at the library for more info.
And of course, all after school programs come with snacks!
Holiday Bazaar is November 30
Calling all local artists, makers, producers and volunteers!
The Lopez Children's Center Annual Holiday Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 30th from 10 am to 3 pm at the LISD Gym. There is still space available for vendors!
We are also looking for community volunteers for the following: Bakers, Cashiers, Set-up, Decorations, and Clean-up. High school students can volunteer for decorations, set-up and clean-up and earn community service hours. Please contact lopezbazaar@gmail.com to sign up as a vendor or community volunteer. Students: Contact Sara Wysocki if you want to earn Community Service Hours as a high school volunteer.
Sports Physicals Spots Open in Jan & Feb
The Lopez Clinic has upcoming sports physical and well child appointments available in January and February. If your student plays a spring sport (Track or Golf) this is a great time to get those physicals done.
School Fees are Due
Semester 1 Fees are due. Paying your fees on time is very important in helping us stay on track with our budget. You can check to see if you have unpaid fees in our student database, Qmlativ in a few simple steps. It is easy to reset your username or password if you need that as well. Once you are logged in, click on you student(s) name, and then navigate to the fees & payments section. It will show an "amount due" at the top of the list. That is the amount the school needs to collect at this time.
Contact Sara Jones to make a payment. 360-468-2202 x2300, sjones@lopezislandschool.org

Last Vaccine Clinics for Students is December 5
Senior Profile: Mirabella Velo
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I’ve done ASB for two years, yearbook since 10th grade, Spanish club last year, Youth Health Advocates Club through the Family Resource Center since last year, MPPACT since 10th grade, golf team since 9th grade, and the new journalism club. That’s my senior project with Ruby.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
Probably just sitting in the lunchroom with my friends talking. This year, I have a lot of meetings during lunch, but I have good memories of just random whacky conversations.
What is the best piece of advice you have received from a teacher?
It’s not really a direct piece of advice, but in middle school, we read Esperanza Rising in Mr. Carter’s class. There was a saying in the book about mountains and valleys. That theme just kept coming back all year as a motto for life, and it still does.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
My friends, my family, and my Tide stain pen. I always keep a Tide pen with me, just in case.
What is one song that summarizes your graduation from high school?
I listen to this song when I get really stressed out. It’s called Chicago and it’s by the Staves. It’s a cover of the original and I don’t know who played that. The song is about this group of friends that move to Chicago. The melody and harmonies of the song are really beautiful. “All things go” is a repeated lyric and it reminds of of moving on to a different place, a different city.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
Enjoy it. Have fun. Just don't let all of the work and responsibilities get you down. The memories you have of doing homework and the memories you have of hanging out with friends are vastly different. I mean you should be responsible and do your work. Just don’t be stressed out all the time.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
In 10th grade English class, we wrote a personal narrative in Mr. Carter’s class. It was such a nice assignment because we could write about anything about ourselves. It meant something to me to be able to write about my experience with moving around to various places on the island. I felt really good about my writing and the chance to just write about myself. I re-read that essay every once in a while.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
I think that being able to laugh and have humor in a friendship is really important…..and also kindness, honestly, and being supportive of each other. When I think of my friendships and what I love most about them is that we can all just be together and laugh. A small school is nice because you can be friends with everyone.
In 10 years, I will be…
Happy, learning, growing, and enjoying my life…hopefully doing something that I love. I don’t know what that is right now. I think I might like to live in a bigger city with a lot of new things to see and do.
Who/what do you find inspiring?
My mother. She is the most inspiring person I know. She has been through so much, and she is strong and resilient. She has always encouraged me to learn and grow, and supported me in anything I want to do or be.
What are your plans after high school?
I’m going to attend a four year college. I’m not sure if it will be an art school or a university. I’m not sure yet what I’ll be majoring in, but I’m thinking about art. I like learning a lot of things, so it’s kind of hard to pinpoint that one thing that is going to be my future. I’m just excited to go to school and have that experience.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
I’ve made a lot of choices in high school. Some of them I initially regretted, but I have learned that you can’t live with regrets. You have to just take every day as it comes. Also, I really love the color blue.
