What's Happening in our Class!
G5LIFE - What's Happening 10/6/2024
Dear G5 Families,
Learning This Past Week
Language Arts: In our language arts classes, students have started reading the book "My Teacher's an Alien." They have been engaging in thoughtful discussions and responding to prompts in their writers' notebooks. Students also learned how to compare and contrast through a poster project and wrote about their early influences in reading. We continue to hold regular reading conferences throughout the month.
Social Studies: In social studies, students completed their PowerPoint presentations and taught their teammates about the geography of the United States, including landforms, latitude, longitude, continents, and oceans, and how geography impacts cultures. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and dedication to learning.
Math: In math, students calculated the volume of figures made of two rectangular prisms, showcasing their problem-solving skills.
Science: students studied the kelp forest ecosystem, creating food webs and exploring the roles of decomposers, producers, and consumers, building a strong foundation for their understanding of the natural world.
We are proud of our students' hard work and achievements, and we are grateful to have such an engaged and supportive school community. The Carnival last Friday was a huge success, and it was wonderful to see students, staff, and families coming together to celebrate.

Math - Unit 1 Finding Volume
As we near the end of this unit, students will be assessed on their learning. The good news is that they will be able to use their math notebooks during the test.
Throughout the unit, we have covered important topics together as a class, such as:
- How to find the volume of a rectangular prism
- How to find the volume of a figure made up of prisms
To monitor student understanding, we have been conducting regular "Cool Down" (CD) assessments. Your child should have all the CDs, as well as 2 Checkpoints in their binder. These formative assessments provide valuable insight into your child's progress.
In addition to the whole-class instruction, I have been working one-on-one and in small groups with students as needed, to ensure they are fully prepared for the end-of-unit assessment.
You may want to check out the Unit 1 Vocabulary document attached. These are posted on the board.
