Have you heard of the Newbery Award winning book A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle? A new movie version of the book is coming out in early March. The movie trailer is posted below. The PES challenge is to read the book and pass an AR test. Students who accomplishes this goal will be entered into a contest for two tickets to see the movie and a brag tag! We have about 25 copies of the book in the library. Come check out yours and take the challenge. The Deadline is March 2.

During this week Palencia will join our state in celebrating all things reading. The theme this year is "find yourself in a book." We will be celebrating with a week full of these fun activities.

Monday: Magazine Monday - students will read magazines during independent reading time

Tuesday: Hunt Down a Good Book - wear your camouflage clothes

Wednesday: Wear Words - wear clothes with words on them

Thursday: Buddy Reading Day - intermediate classes will read with primary classes

Friday: Flashlight Friday – bring a flashlight and read

PES students and families have access to 1700 e-books to read via MackinVIA. Some books are interactive, some can be used as a read aloud, while others are simply a standard book to be read online. Celebrate the amazing A. A. Milne’s birthday this month by reading Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick. You'll love this biographical picture book that shares the true story of Winnie the Bear. Of course you won't want to miss a classic Winnie the Pooh Tale too. You might also like Pooh games, videos and other activities on Disney's Winnie the Pooh site.

During this time students are invited to chew bubble gum during their media resource time. This holiday is traditionally a library fundraiser. We will collect quarters during media resource and use the proceeds to purchase new Bubble Gum print books and e-books for the media center. The best part of bubble gum days are the stories we read and the bubble gum we chew. Look for bubble gum fun ideas in next month's Pirate Cove Connection.

"World Read Aloud Day is an annual event where people all over the world read aloud as a way to advocate for literacy. This event is run by a nonprofit organization called LitWorld. Their mission is to provide reading and writing opportunities to young children around the world. This year World Read Aloud Day takes place on February 1." ~Kelly Hincks

Ms. Char is one of our go to volunteers in the media center. She helps with our Book Fair each Spring and Fall. You might see her helping students checking out books or adding an extra pair of helping hands during special events. She is also the magic behind library displays and laminating projects in the media center. We are so very happy to have her helping in the library.

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth.

To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardback book. This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves.
