East Side Connect - October

Message from the Superintendent
Dear ESUHSD Community,
Thank you for the work of everyone in our community during the first three months of school to support students. At our last board meeting, the Board of Trustees recognized the exceptional achievements of our students, Ritwin Narra and Kaylee Nguyen, who obtained a perfect score on the Calculus BC exam - two of only 16 in the world! Both students were taught by Leena Guttal at Silver Creek who herself earned the Yale Educator Award. I also want to take a moment to extend congratulations to Traci Williams, ESUHSD's Director of Adult Education, for earning the Dr. TJ Owens Education Award.
These achievements and awards are a testament to the academic caliber and community-oriented nature of our East Side educators. Thanks to all of you and congratulations! East Side continues to lay the groundwork for further student development. During the Board’s two latest meetings the Board approved new instructional materials for our district and new courses which will ensure we continue to meet student’s evolving educational needs into the future.
I had the pleasure to attend the Spartan East Side Promise Scholarship Awards Night, where 38 ESUHSD alumni currently enrolled at SJSU received $50,000 in scholarships. These scholarships show the community’s investment in providing opportunities for our students - and all made possible by the East Side Education Foundation.
The Spartan East Side Promise means that each and every one of our students is guaranteed admission to San Jose State University if they meet the minimum eligibility criteria. The deadline to apply this year is November 30, 2023 so I encourage you to learn more and apply at bit.ly/eastsidepromise
Thank you for your partnership this year and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with you.
Sincerely,
Glenn Vander Zee
Superintendent
East Side Union High School District

Board of Trustees Adopt Instructional Materials and Updated and New Courses
The Instructional Policies Committee (IPC), comprised of teachers, site administrators, subject area coordinators, and district office staff presented their recommendations on curriculum and instruction. The presentation provided an update on the actions and work undertaken by this committee. Among the recommendations from the IPC were to approve courses and instructional materials for mathematics, a pilot extension for a course in Data Science, science courses aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, English textbook adoptions, Career Technical Education (CTE) courses, Social Studies courses including a pilot for a Law Pathway, and updates to visual arts courses. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve these recommendations.
Board of Trustees Approve the Receipt of the 2023-2024 Unaudited Actuals Report
Each year, districts are required to include an estimate of the ending fund balance for each fund with the Budget Adoption process. Michele Huntoon, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, presented the unaudited actuals report to the Board of Trustees.
In multi-year projections, ESUHSD’s unrestricted funds will reduce dramatically from an Ending Fund Balance of $67 million in surplus in 2023-2024 to an Ending Fund Balance with a $27.7 million deficit in 2025-2026. This is partly because much of ESUHSD’s current Ending Fund Balance includes one-time funds that will not be provided again by the state and federal government.
The next steps for the financial report is to hold Budget Advisory Committees and provide a plan to the Santa Clara County Office of Education outlining how the Board will address the budget deficit.
Plan for Convening Task Force on Safety
Superintendent Vander Zee presented ESUHSD plans to convene a Task Force that will aim to address issues related to safety and impacts for the community.
The Task Force will have representatives from key partner groups including:
- Teachers and teacher representatives (East Side Teacher Association (ESTA))
- Students
- Parents
- School Site Administrators (Principal(s) and Assistant Principal(s))
- Classified school site staff (e.g., Campus Monitors) and classified staff representatives (California School Employees Association (CSEA))
- Superintendent & Superintendent’s Council
- Board members
The Task Force meetings will be facilitated by an outside, independent facilitator and first convened in October. Final findings are expected to be presented to the Board of Trustees for action in December 2023.
Board of Trustees Move Forward with Plans to Develop a Facilities Master Plan
The Board of Trustees voted to move forward with A Facilities Master Plan (FMP) which was last formally updated in 2017. The updated plan will provide an appropriate framework to continue school facilities modernization and execute it efficiently. The timeline for the Facilities Master Plan will be as follows.
Board of Trustees Recognize Perfect Scores and Teacher Leena Guttal for Receiving the Yale Educator Award
