US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. released a statement with proposed regulations for protecting youth. Policy propositions include:
- Have all flavored e-cigarette products sold only in age-restricted, in-person locations. This excludes tobacco, mint and menthol flavors used for adults transitioning away from smoking cigarettes.
- Monitor the rates and use patterns among youth and adults for tobacco, mint and menthol flavored products and revise policy as needed.
- Curtail the sale of applicable flavored e-cigarette products currently sold online without heightened age verification processes.
- Propose a product standard that would ban flavors in all cigars.
- Pursue the removal from the market of products marketed to children and/or appealing to youth.
- Ban menthol in combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars.
Notice: No time frame has been provided other than "sometime in 2019" though changes are expected quickly. It may take weeks, if not months for retailers to adjust to the changes. In advance of these regulations, Juul stopped selling most flavored products in stores without age restrictions.

You can make a difference with Operation Prevention. Film an opioid awareness public service announcement for a chance to win $10,000 dollars. Sponsored by the DEA and Discovery Education.
Prescription opioid misuse and heroin use have reached epidemic levels but you can change that. High school students have the power to send a message to their peers about the dangers of prescription drug misuse by creating a 30-60 second original public service announcement. Grab your camera, recruit your friends and submit your video for a chance to win $10,000 and other great prizes. Help lead the change in schools!

Prevent Coalition is recruiting youth volunteer ages 13-20 for a Youth Advisory Committee to support the work of Youth Now.
Youth Advisers offer youth voice to share insights, provide guidance and help implement online prevention messaging while supporting the coalition goals. Their primary charge is advising, planning or helping coordinate social media strategy.
No prevention or leadership experience is necessary to get involved in this opportunity! Advisers meet once a month for two hours at a youth-friendly location beginning in January 2019 with a volunteer orientation.

"Real Camels Don't Smoke!"
On November 17th Prevent celebrated the Great American Smoke Out with Tobacco Free Kids at the Clark County Event Center. Madison Langer, Tobacco Free Kids Youth Ambassador coordinated the event to honor healthy lifestyles and coping strategies.
Curly The Camel attended as well and was a joy to be around! Curly took pictures with guests and spread the word that "Real camels don't smoke!" There was food, fun games, and representatives from all coalitions in Clark County to share prevention education and connect participants with their communities.
Thank you to all who made this event possible and to Madison for all the hard work!

Deb Drandoff and Tina Johnson from ESD112 presented during this OSPI Gate Equity Webinar last month. The video recording is now available.
With the growing awareness of opioids and other drugs, students using tobacco and vaping devices are sometimes are seen as the “least of worries”. This webinar prompts providers, communities, and schools to re-think students who use tobacco and vaping products. We set the stage for considering alternative policies and practices that support the whole child.
