Share Your Story from Harry Brake, Woodbridge High School
What can School Librarians do? With the environment? With the world around us? Melisa, our Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy Upward Bound work study student, had won The RENEW Scholarship in the state of all entries in Delaware, won the first place prize in all of DE for her video on the environment through the Sussex Protection Coalition, and we JUST were notified she won the Environmentalist of the YEAR in DE - as we received a call from Governor Carney and DNREC today.
Each step of the way, we talked about researching through fake news, real news, real stats, versus stats that people just throw out at a whim. We have five other work study students that are combing the community and podcasting/interviewing them in volumes and this...
is what...
...certified school librarians do ..
...on top of 100 other things people are not aware of.
Melisa is on her way to L.A. now to a leadership conference and returns where we celebrate how information can lead the way to a successful future.
School Librarians, JUST GET IT DONE.
Share your success stories.
Awards adults receive are a result of the interests students have and want to achieve.
Period.
Do you have a story to share? We would love to share your story. Send your story and photos as you would like it to appear in the newsletter to: misty.boyle@christina.k12.de.us
Delaware Diamonds
Looking for ways to engage your students? Participating in Delaware Diamonds might be the ticket. Voting on which book is picked for a statewide award means their opinion matters.
The Delaware Diamonds Book Award has been in Delaware schools for over 30 years. It’s a statewide program where students pick, on an annual basis, award winners in grade level categories (Kindergarten-2nd Grade, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-12). This program is designed to help young readers in Delaware become better acquainted with some of the quality literature available in recently published books and to promote reading as a lifelong joy.
Each September, a Welcome Packet is sent to principals, school librarians and classroom teachers. It consists of: a participation letter, lists of the books students are invited to vote on at the end of the school year; and letters from the winning authors (if sent).
How are the book lists created? Publishers, authors and committee members send books that have been published within the last three years for review to either Karen Gordon (akadelawhere@comcast.net), committee chair for K-5th Grade or Kelley Wilson (kelley.wilson@bsd.k12.de.us), committee chair for Grades 6-12. The two committees meet in May to finalize the book lists for the following school year. Those lists and current information about Delaware Diamonds can be found here.
We look forward to having you join us in September.
