Safety First
Stay safe
For the safety of all our scholars and Tower, we ask that these procedures be maintained by all when visiting our school:
- Any time any adult or child is visiting our campus, please have a photo ID and check in at our front office to sign in and receive a visitor badge
- Our front lot outside is a bus only lot each morning and afternoon from 8:55 AM - 9:10 AM and 3:25 PM - 4:05 PM
- If you wish to pick up your child early, please notify our office by 2:00 PM. A valid picture ID is required.
- To avoid learning disruption for all classrooms as well as excessive absences, please minimize early dismissals whenever possible.
- Please note, teachers are teaching during school hours. If you would like to speak to your child's teacher, phoning or emailing is the best route for communication during our school day.
- Our school day starts at 9:10 AM, DROP OFF BEGINS AT 8:55 AM, no earlier for the safety of our scholars. Our school day ends at 3:45 PM. Please note these times as we do not have staffing outside of these hours.
MCA Testing Information
MCA Testing
Dear Parents and Guardians:
MCA statewide Reading and Math assessments are coming up in April for all 3rd and 4th grade students. We find that parents and students experience more confidence in the assessment process when they better understand its purpose and expected outcomes. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) are state tests in mathematics and reading that meet the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA.) They are given every year to measure student performance against the Minnesota Academic Standards that specify what students in a particular grade should know and be able to do. Assessment results can be used to determine whether all students are mastering key content knowledge and attaining the skills necessary for future success in education and the workforce. Schools use the information to improve classroom teaching and learning. Teachers and principals look for areas where students do well so they can reinforce the ways they teach these skills. They also look for areas of improvement so they can increase instructional time or change their instruction. Districts and schools use the results as only one part of the comprehensive information they collect on students and their performance. Dates for the assessments at Stevenson are listed below.
Grade 3 & 4 MCA Reading: April 16th and 17th
Grade 3 & 4 MCA Math: April 23rd and 24th
Ways Families Can Support our Students during testing weeks
- Have students get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious, protein-filled breakfast before taking the test (breakfast is offered at school)
Encourage students to answer all test questions and take their time, the MCA is not a timed test. They can go at their own pace. It’s important to do well even if it means they are not getting done as fast as everyone else seems to be.
Please take note of the guidelines for personal technology use: Students must not use or access cell phones, wearable technology, or any other devices at any time during a testing session, including during breaks or when they finish testing for the day. “Wearable” technology is defined as devices that may be worn on a student’s body that can electronically send, receive, or capture information (for example, smartwatches, fitness trackers, Bluetooth headphones).(MCA Procedures Manual, MN Department of Education, Chapter 8)
In compliance with this policy, each teacher at Hayes administering MCA assessments will review the policy with students prior to the start of testing each day and will provide a secure location for device storage if necessary.

Battle of the Books
In the first annual Battle of the Books, 3rd and 4th grade students at Hayes and RLS formed teams in the fall, then worked together to read a list of 10 books. They competed against grade level teams within their buildings, then the winning teams came together on Tuesday for a Crosstown Competition. During competition they answered questions about the books to prove their knowledge. The winning team included Hayes 4th graders, Ibrahim R., Anders O., and Kelvyn S.
Read Aloud Guests
