Dragon Community Newsletter #3
Denn John Middle School 24-25
Together! Always!
Dragon Community,
Your involvement in your child's education is more than just a support system; it is a fundamental pillar that upholds their academic and personal growth. When parents and guardians engage with their child's learning journey, it creates a partnership that enriches their educational experience. This collaboration fosters a positive attitude toward school, encourages a strong work ethic, and enhances academic performance.
Here are a few ways your involvement can make a significant difference:
Engagement in Learning: Showing interest in what your child is learning and participating in school activities or events can make a huge impact. Simple actions, like discussing their day or helping with homework, reinforce the importance of education. Above all, evening reading sessions! Read. Read. Read. Read! (Anything really!)
Communication with Teachers: Open lines of communication between you and your child’s teachers help address any challenges early on and create a supportive network for your child’s success.
Encouraging a Growth Mindset: Supporting and encouraging your child through both successes and setbacks helps them develop resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.
Participation in School Events: Attending parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and other events demonstrates your commitment and helps build a strong school community.
Research consistently shows that students whose parents are involved in their education tend to perform better academically, exhibit better behavior, and have higher self-esteem. Your engagement not only benefits your child but also strengthens our entire school community.
Together, we can create an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our students' success.
DJMS Administration
What's New?!
Parents & Community!
Here is the skinny for this week:
1. HB 1473 states that all exterior doors must remain locked. For this reason, our front administration door is now locked. Our deepest apologies for this inconvenience as we are also adapting to this change. In addition, students will utilize keyless cards when being called to go home or visit the nurse/admin/counselor. These keyless cards are stationed with the teachers and will be checked out accordingly. Note, should a student deliberately tamper or transfer this card to another person knowingly, then serious discipline consequences will be implemented. Please help us reinforce the message that school safety is important, and all students should follow school rules.
2. Car Rider Line- Parents, as an effort to expedite the dismissal process, please move all the way up to the end of the line. Students will now wait towards the end of the car rider line and will not be permitted to walk in the opposite direction to reach your car. This greatly impacts traffic and delays many families. Our goal is to have a safe and quick exit process for your convenience.
3. Laptops-
Parents! We have good and bad news!
Bad news: Over 100 checked out laptops to students have concerns
Good news: About 98% of our student have a laptop checked out
Here is the issue at hand: DJMS does not have enough laptops on site to fix the problem immediately. I have reached out to our technology department to address this concern. Because of this, we are on a priority list to receive an additional 200 laptops (approximately). Last Friday, we received 50 more laptops and issued those out immediately!
Because we understand this is at no fault to the student, I sent a memo to the staff stating that students without laptops or functioning laptops will not receive any grade penalties. Please allow 48 hours for teachers to make this adjustment to impacted students. The students without laptops will receive paper assignments until the new laptops arrive.
I simply ask for your patience and kindness as our team is working very hard to resolve this issue. Unfortunately, my team is limited on specific resources to address this concern on site in that very moment.
If you have any laptop concerns, you may reach out to Mr. Hernandez.
4. 24-25 Bell Schedule Attached
5. New Front Office Receptionist & Attendance Clerk
Parents, please help me welcome Ms. Sandra Rosero to the Dragon Family! She is our new front office receptionist and attendance clerk. Should you need to submit attendance notes, Ms. Rosero will receive those all year long.
6. 504 & ESE Accommodations
Parents, by now all teachers received student 504 & ESE accommodations. Your ESE point of contact is Ms. Emilye Chasen (RCS). If there are any ESE concerns, please contact Ms. Chasen to help problem solve any ESE related situation.
The school counselors oversee 504 at DJMS. For your reference, below you will find their information:
Aponte, Annette
- 8th Grade
- 7th Grade (Last Names A - M)
Librado, Marlene
- 6th Grade
- 7th Grade (Last Names N - Z)
7. Student IDs
Parents, most students received their hard and permanent student IDs last Friday. There are a handful of students that did not receive their IDs. They will receive their permanent IDs next week. Note, all students have a paper ID.
Remember, these IDs are required for bus access in the am/pm. Please remind your student the importance of responsibility and not losing their IDs.
At Home Support
As we transition into the normal school year, the list below is how parents can support our school at home:
1. See Something, Say Something
Parents, we want to teach our students the importance of reporting unsafe situations. Whether it may be student harassment, bullying, safety concerns, or anything uncomfortable, please help us reinforce the message of "see something, say something." Any student may report any activity to a school adult.
2. Parent Portal Sign Up
The best way to know live data of your student's performance is through the parent portal! Here you can see grades, attendance, discipline referrals, teacher notes, and testing information in live time. For your reference, below you will find the attachment to sign up. I highly recommend this for all parents!
3. Review Weekly Assignments
I am firm believer that all human beings have a natural ability to learn! However, our motivation and organization skills can be our faults when things go south. So parents, please help us monitor your student's assignments and ensure they do not fall behind. More often than not, students fail a course due to not completing their assignments. It is very rare that students fail a course due to full participation and complete their assignments on time.
4. Bullying & Harassment
DJMS will be a zero-tolerance school for bullying and harassment. With a lot of negative influences hurting student emotions, we will not cultivate an environment where students do not feel safe. Therefore, if a confirmed student investigation shows to be substantiated, the consequence as outlined in the SDOC Code of Conduct will be fully executed. So please help us teach our students that kindness goes a long way. If there are students that your child does not want to associate with, simply ask them to turn the other way and make friends with those who support them in a positive manner. Also, bystanders are not cool. We want to teach our students that it is expected to report inappropriate behavior or misconduct that can hurt a student emotionally. Any school dean, teacher, counselor, or administrator can receive these concerns.
5. Dress Code & Cellphone Policies
Parents for your reference, attached you will find our dress code & cellphone policy that is strictly enforced.

2. Testing Schedule Attached (24-25)
PBIS
Dragon Dollars is a fast and simple to recognize a student for complying with the basic rules of conduct. It takes the concept of “Observe and Praise Appropriate Behavioral Actions” and extends it by making it easy to award points to students for positive behaviors. Students can then redeem their accumulated dragon dollars in the school store for tangible and intangible rewards. Also, we host school events on Fridays where students use Dragons Dollars to participate. Think of it as a student cash for their PBIS points. This also includes Pep Rallies, School Dances, and much more!
The Denn John Middle School Dragons breathe F.I.R.E., which stands for Focus, Integrity, Respect, and Engaged in Learning. Our goal is to provide a learning environment that promotes both academic and social growth.
I am proud to report that 8th grade behavior improved much better this week! Parents, thank you for your support reinforcing the message that learning is required. Though there is still room for improvement, we celebrate the progress along the way!
