M-Step
M-STEP Information for Parents
This Spring, Riley students will be taking the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress) The M-STEP is a 21st-century test given primarily online each spring and is designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. These standards, developed for educators by educators, broadly outline what students should know and be able to do to be prepared to enter the workplace, career education training, and college.
M-STEP results, when combined with classroom work, report cards, local district assessments and other tools, offer a comprehensive view of student progress and achievement. For additional information, click M-STEP: What it is, What it means - And What it Offers.Field Trips
Field Trip Guide for Parents
Hi there,
Riley has several field trip dates coming up in several grades. Field trips are an extension of the classroom and provide valuable opportunities for students to engage with their peers, enhance their learning experience, and broaden their understanding through hands-on exploration of different environments and subject matter. To guarantee that everyone, including parents, have a unique and enjoyable experience, we would like to outline some of our expectations as a school to prioritize the safety and well-being of all students.
The following highlights some school expectations regarding field trips:
Chaperones/Volunteers
-Parents who have been asked to chaperone/volunteer and are going to be in charge of groups of students must have an ICHAT background check. Ask your child's teacher for the chaperone background check form. This is provided by the school.
-Chaperones only need to fill out a background check form once per year. If you have already done so, please check with your child's teacher to make sure you have been cleared.
-Students are expected to remain with their assigned groups, even if their parents are present.
Student/Parent Dismissal
-Students who ride the bus to the field trip location are expected to ride the bus back.
-If there is a special circumstance where you need to transport your student from the field trip we kindly ask that you make sure to prearrange this with the child's teachers and the office.
-If a student is signed out by a parent/guardian on the day of the field trip that student is marked as absent from school at that time.

Camp Invention is Back
Camp Invention® is coming to St. Johns Public Schools at Oakview Elementary!
In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame®, St. Johns Public Schools is excited to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering kindergarten through sixth grade.
This inspiring, weeklong summer experience provides opportunities for open-ended, hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering and more! Taking on a variety of exhilarating activities each day, children have fun collaborating with friends, thinking creatively, and inventing their own solutions to real-world challenges.
The week begins on June 17th with Rachael Post serving as Director (a St. Johns Public School teacher). The all-new 2024 program will spark the imagination of both new and returning campers with an adventure full of inspiration, innovation, and unforgettable discoveries!
During this action-packed, confidence-boosting program, young innovators will:
- • In the Game: Develop their own sports ball and customize a light-up game with a unique brand and logo as they explore athletics, design and innovation
- • Let’s Glow: Discover the science of light through illuminating inventions and fluorescent animals, then build a one-of-a-kind Glow Box using circuitry and ultraviolet light
- • Operation HydroDrop: Embark on an epic global operation to tackle water challenges around the world, learning the role that water plays with the help of a robotic lab-on-wheels
- • Prototyping Game Show: Star as a contestant on a prototyping game show, molding and shaping ideas into awesome inventions using everyday items and a DIY toolbox
Early registration discounts are available! Register using SUM25 by 3/27 to save $25 off the $270 registration fee. Availability is limited, so visit invent.org/mylocalcamp or call 800-968-4332 to secure your child’s spot today!
