Introducing Opinion Writing to Kindergarten: A Fun Start!
Kindergarten learners are diving into the world of writing by using oral language and beginning writing skills to express their thoughts. Today, the focus is on opinion writing, a key step in helping students communicate their ideas clearly.
We begin the writing lessons by asking the class simple, engaging questions: "Do you think ice cream is the best treat?" or "Is recess the best part of the day?" These questions encourage students to share their opinions aloud, fostering discussion and helping them understand that everyone has different ideas.
Next, the teacher introduces a visual chart with sentence starters like, "I think..." or "I believe..." Students practice forming sentences to express their thoughts, supported by pictures or drawings. These early experiences with oral language help build confidence and provide a foundation for writing. The students also listen to various stories where they can insert their opinions about situations brought up in the text. A fan favorite is Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (Willems, 2003) Would you let the Pigeon drive? Most kindergarteners at Mark Twain would not! They put great thought behind their opinions, "His legs are too short to touch the pedals" or "I would not want him to crash into our school!" are just some of their creative ideas!
As they progress, kindergarteners start writing simple sentences or drawing pictures to represent their opinions. With each activity, they develop the skills needed to clearly state their ideas, laying the groundwork for more complex writing in the future. Opinion writing becomes not just a lesson but an exciting way for kids to share what they think!

Twain Parking Lot Reminders
The North lot is NOT a drop-off/ pick-up zone. It is for parking only. We MUST keep the loop open for busses and emergency vehicles. This rule applies to everyone, so please be cooperative and follow it.
The large, central lot has two lanes: a drop-off/ pick-up lane on the outside of the loop and a driving lane on the inside.
Please note: Drivers MAY NOT get out of your car while in the outside drop-off/ pick-up lane. Your students must exit to the outside of the loop, and drivers must not exit the car to walk students up or pick them up. If you have younger children who need to be walked up or picked up at the door, you MUST park your car in one of the lots or on the street.
Smoking and pets are not permitted on school grounds. Please leave your pets at home for the safety and comfort of all of our students and families.
Please do NOT swear on school grounds. We are trying to set a positive example for behavior for our Twain Comets, and shouting and swearing at other drivers does not set the right example for our kids. We ask our students to be respectful, organized, cooperative, kind, and safe, and we expect those behaviors to be modeled by our parents, too.
