The Little Judges' Docket
News from VACDES for the Week of May 28 - 30
A Message from Dr. Pluska
Just a reminder that we do not have school tomorrow, Monday, May 27th due to Memorial Day. Last week was a fantastic week! We had so much fun with field day. We also had a great visit to the Douglas School to learn about the history and a flag retirement ceremony. This week will be busy. We have Water Day on Tuesday, May 28th, Fourth Grade Promotion Ceremony on Wednesday, May 29th at noon, and the last day of school on Thursday, May 30th with dismissal at 11:15am. I am so proud of our students, staff, and families. We truly worked together this year to be the best we can be and help our students grow. Thank you for entrusting your children to us. We value them and you and will anxiously await next year for the new school year.
We will have our last safety drill of the year this week. We have yearbooks still available for sale for $12. Please let us know if you are interested in purchasing a yearbook.
There will be a Readiness Fair for new students this summer on June 27th from 10am - 6pm. We will be offering physicals and vaccines for the LAST time prior to school starting. This event is for ALL students new to Winchester.
It's time to register for Preschool and Kindergarten!
Do you have a child who will be 4 or 5 by September 30? Everything you need to know about registration is on our registration website: bit.ly/WPSregistration2024
-Registration and eligibility events start soon! Physicals and vaccinations will be offered as listed on the registration website.
-You must bring your required documents, including birth certificate, TWO proofs of residency, physical exam, immunization record, and income verification for PreK only
-We will be using a new system for online registration and an email address is required to register
We can't wait to welcome your student and family to Winchester Public Schools!
Thank you so much for coming after 2pm to be in the car rider line to make sure our students are as safe as possible. Also please make sure you are not blocking the driveways of our neighbors while waiting in line and remember that we need to watch for walkers as we are driving through the neighborhood. If you are picking your child up in a car, you should be going through the car rider line instead of parking on the side of the road and picking them up as a walker. This is for the safety of our students and our neighbors.
There are flyers attached about registration for Right at School, our after school care, for next year. Please see the following website with clear steps on how to register, especially if you want to apply for financial assistance. There will be NO Right at School Summer Program this year.
Thank you as always for your support for our school. We need to work together as a community to make our students successful because we are creating Local leaders today - Global leaders tomorrow!

Academics
Summer school information will be coming out soon for those that are signed up. I am so proud of the growth of our students this school year. I hope you notice it at home as well. We worked hard, you worked hard, and it will definitely pay off. Keep reading and working on math facts this summer! I can honestly say that I am thrilled to be a part of the VACDES family and our students are the best in the division!
Attendance
We did it! It looks like we will meet the required percentage for chronic absenteeism this year. It took hard work from school and home to make this happen. We also have the best families in the division!
We will have our final Perfect Attendance Celebration on May 30th - the last day of school! Thank you for making it a priority so they understand the importance of education. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school year which is 18 days. It does not matter whether it is excused or unexcused. Please do everything you can to make sure your child is at school at least part of the day unless they are sick.
PBIS/Behavior
The last PBIS Quarterly Celebration will be Water Day on May 28th. Students should have their change of clothes and towels for Tuesday. Students should have three or fewer minor referrals for hands on other students and no more than 1 major referral to attend. If they did not meet the criteria, they will still have a fun activity. We are working hard to make sure students understand the expectations and are being safe, kind, and responsible every day. Data tells us our students are quick to put their hands on another student. Please reiterate to your child that we should be keeping hands and feet to self. If your child has someone put hands on them, have them tell a trusted adult so we can handle it.
Every day on the announcements we will be talking about the three school wide rules -
- Keep hands and feet to self and use kind words;
- Stay in your assigned area; and
- Follow directions quickly and quietly.
