National Speech-Language-Hearing Month
Happy National Stuttering Awareness Week!
Trivia Question #1: What do Ed Sheeran, Emily Blunt, James Earl Jones, Joe Biden, and John Stossel have in common?
All of these famous and very successful people are people who stutter – Wow! Even though each one of these individuals is one of the 70 million people who stutter worldwide, they didn’t let it stop them from dreaming BIG and achieving their goals – and if you are someone who stutters, don’t let it stop YOU!
Did you know…
- Stuttering affects 3-4 times as many males as females.
- Approximately 5% of all children go through a period of stuttering that lasts six months or more. Three-quarters of those will recover by late childhood, leaving about 1% with a long-term occurrence.
- Studies show that people who stutter are as intelligent and well-adjusted as those who don’t!
- Speak in an unhurried way, pausing frequently.
- Increase the time that you give your child undivided attention and are listening fully.
- Resist asking questions one after the other.
- Have all members of the family take turns talking and listening.
- Look for ways to use praise to help boost your child’s confidence.
Trivia Question #2: At what age does the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend recreational use of screens? (Answer will be in next week's Bobcat Brief.)
