Greetings!
Welcome back everyone! We started our brassica block this week. We learned an important term, CRUCIFEROUS, which means cross-like. Cruciferous vegetables are brassicas and brassicas are cruciferous vegetables. The terminology can be used interchangeably. They all derive from the wild mustard plant. This family of vegetables includes, cabbages, cauliflower, bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, collards, kale, turnip, horseradish, wasabi, and many others. The students have been harvesting some of our brassicas and making salads. At first, I deprived them of croutons so that they would focus on the healthy leafy greens, however, there were so many disappointed sighs that I inevitably caved and bought croutons. Parents, I am sure you can relate.
Zane and I wore our miki caps (also known as docker hats) to school this week. These hats originated from the docks of Brittany where sailors wore them to shield their heads from the biting winds and sea mist. We tried to get an exclusive photo but the rest of Wheelington’s class insisted on photobombing us.
I am hosting a DAD WORKDAY on February 1st from 9AM until 12PM. This workday is for dads. No kids or wives please. I understand this sounds exclusive, at it may be, but dads are usually an underutilized group in elementary schools. Our amazing school has very proactive dads and I thought it was prudent to host a day in the garden with them. We still have the garden workday for ALL PARENTS on February 22nd.
