Are you passionate about recycling and have some free time on Fridays? Then we need you! We are looking for some parent volunteers to to help our 4th graders while they collect recycling bins around the school and dispose of the materials. Please join us at the Maple Dale Elementary All Pro Dads breakfast on Wednesday November 14th from 8-9am in the school cafeteria. All fathers and children are invited for this free monthly program sponsored by fathers, Chick-fil-A, & the PTO.

This month’s topic is Thankfulness. Often we focus on what we don't have and forget to take to stock of what we do have. If you focus on what you don't have, something will always be missing. It's important to be thankful for what you have and not take those things for granted. Some of the most successful people are generally the most thankful.

The Chick-fil-A cow will be attending our meeting and guests from Operation Give Back will be attending. Learn how you can help others!

Our school is taking the My Energy Kit Challenge and has a goal to save at least 20,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. That’s like taking 40 cars off the road for a whole year! We’ll reach this goal when at least 100 families sign up for a FREE Energy Kit from Duke Energy and use it to make their homes energy efficient. These FREE kits contain items like LED bulbs, faucet aerators and other useful gadgets that can make a big difference toward saving energy at home. When we meet the challenge, our school will automatically win $250. Let’s get a head-start! You can take the My Energy Kit Challenge and sign up for your FREE kit now at MyEnergyKit.org or call 1-855-386-9548.

Have you already received a My Energy Kit? Do you still want to help your school receive free money? Great! Even if you have requested and received a kit before, you can request again and your request will count towards your schools goal of 100 energy efficiency kits. If they get to 100 kits they receive 250 dollars! So help your school out and request your kit today, even if you have already received one.

You may request that your child be tested on the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT). If you wish to have your child participate in this round of testing, all requests must be made through the below online link by December 6th. If you have a child in 2nd and/or 4th grade, they will take the test during school with their class. For other grade levels, we are offering an optional testing opportunity. In order to decrease disruption to your child's instruction, this testing opportunity will take place on Saturday, December 8, at Maple Dale from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm for all four elementary buildings. Please note it is the parents' responsibility to provide transportation to and from Maple Dale on morning of testing. Also please note Sycamore cannot use kindergarten or first grade scores for gifted placement.

IT'S TIME TO DANCE! Please join us as we dance with people from all over the world in celebration of World Kindness Day!

Here's the information:

1. The dance is free but if you would like to register online it is a $5 donation. A portion goes to our local St. Joseph's Orphanage and the rest of the $5 will go to LifeVest Inside which is a nonprofit organization promoting kindness worldwide through education.

4. Practice for the dance is from 1-1:30 pm with Julie Swart and The Queen City Dance Academy

5. The dance will go live at 1:30 pm.

6. We will conclude no later than 2 pm.

Even if you are not a dancer PLEASE come with your family and celebrate kindness with us on World Kindness Day.

Green Team Tip of the Week: Did you know? Maple Dale students can recycle and compost lunch waste in the lunchroom. This Sycamore Community Schools green initiative diverts 400 bags of trash from the landfill EACH WEEK. Recently, Academic Tutor Jan Filitti began offering her services to students at Maple Dale. Her private tutoring sessions use the Orton Gillingham method to increase skills in reading decoding and comprehension using a multisensory approach. Jan also specializes in spelling, phonics, writing and math skills at grades 2 and 3.
