SVDP Newsletter Summer Edition
June 2024
Dear SVDP Community,
Summer break has arrived and we want to emphasize the importance of maintaining academic skills during this extended time away from school. Research has shown that students who continue to read and practice academic skills over the summer are better prepared for the new school year. With that in mind, we'd like to share some strategies for structuring your child's summer break to keep them engaged and learning:
1. Create a Summer Reading List: Encourage your child to select books that interest them and create a summer reading list. Set aside dedicated time each day for reading, whether in the morning, afternoon or before bedtime. Consider setting reading goals to keep your child motivated and track their progress throughout the summer. Take the time to discuss what everyone in the family is reading!
2. Incorporate Learning into Daily Activities: Look for opportunities to incorporate learning into everyday activities. For example, if you're cooking together, involve your child in measuring ingredients and following recipes. If you're going on a nature walk, encourage your child to observe and identify different plants and animals. Model out loud the thinking process for your student. Verbalizing your thinking when completing a task helps your student understand that making choices is a daily occurrence. It can be done when grocery store shopping or deciding whether to attend an event or go out to dinner…it’s that easy!
3. Set Aside Time for Academic Practice: Dedicate time each day for your child to practice academic skills such as math, writing, and critical thinking. Summer Learning Assignments will be provided by the school and there are many online resources and workbooks available that provide age-appropriate activities and exercises to help reinforce these skills. Students of all ages need structure to their day with reachable goals set by the hour or end of the day.
4. Encourage Exploration and Creativity: Summer is a great time for children to explore new interests and hobbies. Encourage your child to pursue activities that spark their curiosity, whether painting, gardening, coding, or learning a musical instrument. These experiences can enhance creativity and critical thinking skills. Play is essential!
5. Stay Engaged and Supportive: As parents, your involvement and support are crucial in helping your child stay motivated and engaged over the summer. Take an active interest in their learning activities, praise their efforts, and provide encouragement along the way.
By implementing these strategies, you can help ensure that your child stays engaged in learning throughout the summer, setting them up for success when they return to school in the fall. Together, we can make this extended break a time of growth and enrichment for your child.
